Dave Chappelle’s Netflix comedy The Closer is at the centre of controversy again, as the show has received two Emmy nominations.

The 48-year-old comedian was accused of transphobia for stating ‘gender is a fact’ in his show while backing JK Rowling and stating he is ‘team Terf’, the acronym for trans-exclusionary radical feminist.

Many urged the streaming service to pull the special, with the likes of Elliot Page and Dan Levy voicing support for employees who staged a walkout over the controversy.

While fans expressed their outrage over the shocking snubs, several were ‘disgusted’ to learn that Chapelle’s one-off show is nominated for outstanding variety special.

‘Oh, so Dave Chappelle has been canceled directly into an Emmy nomination,’ one person tweeted.

‘Genuinely these were some of the most exciting emmy nominations in years and then…they nominated dave chappelle, whatever,’ another added.

#OurFlagMeansDeath wasn’t nominated for any Emmys, not even production design, but Dave Chapelle was.

I think that tells us all we need to know 😒

Dave Chappelle being nominated for Outstanding Variety Special at the Emmys is really all the proof you need that cancel culture doesn’t exist.

Last year, Chappelle went on to suggest that the backlash claimed was down to ‘corporate interests’ and said that the members of the LGBTQ+ community that he knows have been supportive of him.

‘I want everyone in this audience to know that even though the media frames it that it’s me versus that community, that’s not what it is,’ he said.

‘Do not blame the LGBTQ community for any of this. It’s about corporate interests, and what I can say, and what I cannot say.

‘For the record, and I need you to know this, everyone I know from that community has been loving and supporting, so I don’t know what this nonsense is about.’

In May, videos circulated of Chappelle getting attacked on stage before actor and comedian Jamie Foxx helped him up.

Chappelle continued with the show and later told the audience: ‘I don’t know if that was part of the show or… I grabbed the back of that n****s head, his hair was spongy, absorbant.’

He then thanked Foxx for rushing in to help him, saying: ‘Listen, I just want to say I’ve had an incredible time. This guy is a genius, we’ve got to protect him at all times, man. This is what it’s about.

‘For every comedian that comes out here, this means everything. You’re a genius, you’re a legend, I enjoyed myself thoroughly and we’re not gonna let nothing happen to you.’
