Keke Palmer has opened up about representation in film ahead of her lead role in Jordan Peele’s new horror film, Nope

The 28-year-old actress, singer and presenter has gone from success to success from childhood roles on Nickelodeon to more recently starring in movies such as Pixar’s Lightyear. 

In an interview with Glamour for their July cover shoot, Keke opened up about her latest project a horror film with the director of the award-winning Get Out.  

The Hustlers star admitted that one of the reason’s she wanted to work with Jordan in the film was because he champions Black representation in film. 

‘What I love about Jordan Peele is that he normalises Black people in leading roles,’ Keke explained. 

‘And being in the leading role is no commentary on being Black. Obviously, there was that connection with Get Out, but that wasn’t the case with Us.

She continued: ‘However, it is about normalising and putting Blacks and people of colour at the forefront. Telling their narratives and stories effortlessly that includes their culture but doesn’t tie their identity to being Black in a way that’s victimised or subservient. 

‘It’s important for creators like Jordan Peele, actors, and all of us, to continue to push that envelope as it pertains to Black representation being very robust because we are robust people.’

For the glamorous shoot, Keke sported a host of fabulous outfits including a fiery red dress with silver chain straps and and an eye-catching white cut-out dress with a thigh split.

Keke also credits sensational multihyphenates such as Queen Latifah for leading the way for ‘opportunities’ she’s had in her career.

‘When I think about Queen Latifah or Ice Cube, these are some of the people that helped start my career. Because of their success, I got an opportunity,’ she reflected. 

Before adding: ‘I hope one day I can be in a position to produce and create opportunities for people in my community, not just on-screen but behind the screen.’

Looking ahead in her career, Keke admits she also wants to move behind the scenes of film as much as in front of the camera. 

‘I’m excited to produce more, write, direct, and provide other opportunities for more people interested in doing behind-the-scenes work.’
