From Where The Crawdads Sing to Nope: These are the must-see movies in cinemas this summer-Larushka Ivan-Zadeh for Metro-Entertainment – Metro

Now that we’ve already enjoyed entries in the Top Gun, Thor and Jurassic World franchises, as well as a return by the iconic Minions, it might feel like the summer blockbuster season has finished before it’s even really begun.

Well, fear not, as there are still glorious action movies, haunting horrors, gripping dramas and hilarious kids films all to come – and stars like Brad Pitt, Sandra Bullock and Idris Elba will all be making appearances.

These are our picks for the top movies still to come out this summer.

One of the best-selling books of all time gets the inevitable movie makeover.

Reese Witherspoon produces and Normal People’s Daisy Edgar-Jones stars as a lonely outsider called the Marsh Girl in what amounts to a classy adaptation of Delia Owens’ romance/murder mystery/survival tale that is steeped in the American swamplands.

Out July 22.

DC League Of Super-Pets

Just when Marvel looked like it had won the comic book franchise war, rival DC pulls out a secret weapon: super-cute super-animals.

Dwayne Johnson voices Krypto the Super-Dog, who steps up to fight crime when his master, Superman, is kidnapped.

An A-list voice cast includes Kevin Hart, John Krasinski, Kate McKinnon and Keanu Reeves.

Out July 29.

Bullet Train

The one and only Brad Pitt is a ‘Ladybug’, a seasoned professional killer pulled in for one last job by Sandra Bullock in this crazy-looking high-speed action comedy.

His target – to retrieve a briefcase from a Japanese bullet train – is complicated by the mind-boggling number of competing assassins on board (Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Bad Bunny, Brian Tyree Henry etc).

Out August 3.

Luck

Can Simon Pegg get a lucky break (Picture: Apple TV)

Stuck at home with Covid? Let the blockbusters come to you.

From the creators of Toy Story and Cars, this Apple TV+ animation follows the adventures of an unlucky girl who stumbles upon the never-before-seen world of luck.

See if your ears can spot Jane Fonda, Whoopi Goldberg and Simon Pegg in the voice cast.

Out August 5 in cinemas and on Apple TV+.

Oscar-winning auteur Jordan Peele (Us) reunites with his Get Out star, Daniel Kaluuya, for what’s bound to be another provocative, genre-redefining horror.

After random alien objects fall from the sky and kill their father, two ranch-owning siblings (Kaluuya and Keke Palmer) attempt to capture video evidence of the UFOs.

Out August 12.

Laal Singh Chaddha

Originally scheduled for a big Christmas release back in 2020 but then delayed multiple times due to Covid, this Bollywood remake of Forrest Gump finally hits global screens this summer.

Megastar/producer Aamir Khan takes on the Tom Hanks role in a lavish Hindi-language production that was shot in over 100 locations.

Out August 12.

Fisherman’s Friends: One And All

The 2019 Fisherman’s Friends film was an unlikely box-office smash.

This sequel continues the saga of a real-life ‘buoy band’ of folk-singing Cornish fishermen (led by James Purefoy) as they navigate the choppy waters of fame and second album syndrome, this time accompanied by Irish singer-songwriter Imelda May, making her acting debut.

Out August 19.

The Invitation

There are strong Get Out vibes to this, a horror scenario that sees a young mixed-race woman (Nathalie Emmanuel) discover a cousin she never knew she had (Hugh Skinner).

He invites her to lavish wedding in the English countryside, where she discovers some bloody secrets (not actually secret at all, if you’ve watched the trailer).

Out August 26.

Mr Malcolm’s List

Thanks to Bridgerton, Regency romances with colourblind casting are all the rage these days. This one, based on Suzanne Allain’s novel, casts Sope Dirisu (Gangs Of London, His House) as the titular eligible bachelor with a checklist of lofty requirements any bride must meet.

Beast

Have they saved the best till last? Summer bows out with a roar thanks to this big-budget survival thriller.

A furry take on Jaws, it casts Idris Elba as a widower who takes his daughters to South Africa only for them to find themselves stalked by a very hungry lion.
