Four months after its debut, Heardle has grown popular enough to be bought out by Spotify, which has big plans for the game’s future.
While there are near countless fan-made spin-offs and clones of Wordle, only a fraction of them have managed to become anywhere near as popular as the original.
Heardle, in particular, quickly gained notoriety for being more than a simple copy-and-paste of Wordle, instead challenging players to guess a song based on a small snippet of it.
Much like Wordle, it’s become popular enough to be snapped up for an undisclosed amount of money. Not by The New York Times, though, but by Spotify, which is definitely more fitting.
Much like The New York Times’ acquisition of Wordle, Spotify has no plans (at least so far) to lock Heardle behind a paywall and will keep the game free.
The only changes made are that the game has been moved to Spotify’s website and there’s now an option to listen to the full song on Spotify at the end of a daily puzzle. Oh, and the font for the logo’s changed too.
Spotify has also shared the means of transferring your stats over to the new link, so you don’t need to worry about starting from scratch if you have a win streak you’re proud of.
That said, Spotify has laid out its intentions for the game’s future. For starters, it wants to make Heardle more globally accessible so that users can play it in their native language.
In addition, it’s ‘planning to integrate Heardle and other interactive experiences more fully into Spotify to allow music lovers to connect more deeply with artists and challenge friends – and have some fun in the process.’

Jeremy Erlich, Spotify’s global head of music, said: ‘Heardle has proven to be a really fun way to connect millions of fans with songs they know and love and with new songs… and a way to compete with their friends as to who has the best musical knowledge.
‘Since its debut, the game has quickly built a loyal following, and it aligns with our plans to deepen interactivity across the Spotify ecosystem.’
It’s not surprising to see Heardle get bought out four months after its debut. It too has been copied multiple times, with different versions dedicated to specific topics, such as video games, and even specific bands like BTS.
