The July line-up of new retro additions for PS Plus was going to be better, before three games were mysteriously removed.

Now that the revamped PlayStation Plus service is available worldwide, we can look forward to more games being added to it every month, including retro games from older consoles.

Unfortunately, Sony’s first month of post-launch additions is rather underwhelming. In terms of retro games, it only added two PlayStation Portable games. And not very famous ones at that.

On top of that, Sony initially advertised that there would be five retro games in total for July’s update, and then swiftly retracted three of them: Dino Crisis for the PlayStation 1, and Ridge Racer 2 and Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny for the PSP.

For whatever reason, though, these three games were only listed on the Italian PlayStation Blog post about the July update, which at first suggested that these would be exclusive to Italian subscribers.

Shortly after, they were removed, so they clearly weren’t meant to be included in the first place.

This is another kick in the teeth for Dino Crisis fans. Aside from Capcom forgoing a new sequel or remake for another dinosaur themed project, in the form of Exoprimal, Dino Crisis was used in a previous PS Plus promotion when it launched in Asian territories, despite not actually being available.

Even if Sony had included these three games, it still wouldn’t have made the line-up that much better. There is an admitted dearth of PSP games on the service, but the line-up of PS1 and PlayStation 2 games is also lacking and most fans would consider that a higher priority.

The one bit of good news to take is that Sony must intend on adding Dino Crisis, Ridge Racer 2, and Soulcalibur: Broken Destiny at a later date. Ridge Racer 2 is definitely on the cards since it is currently available on the service in Asia.

Although we can’t help but raise an eyebrow at the idea that these PSP games would be added before the original Ridge Racer for PS1 and any of the PlayStation 2 Soulcalibur games.

The main focus of the July update seems to be extra PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games, which are also available on the cheaper Extra tier of the service.

The biggest highlights of July’s new Extra games are Stray, which is a brand new release but will be free for subscribers, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade, a major PlayStation 5 exclusive from 2021.

The line-up also includes Marvel’s Avengers, Saints Row 4: Re-Elected, and multiple Assassin’s Creed games, as well as tie-in games for Ice Age, Jumanji, and Paw Patrol.
