FromSoftware’s epic has now passed the status of ludicrously successful and entered the realm of incomprehensibly huge hit.

Every time we talk about the sales of Elden Ring things seem to get ever more unbelievable. The most recent revelation was that Elden Ring is predicted to end up as the best-selling game of the year in the US, ahead of Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2.

That was just a week ago though, and now US chart-tracker NPD Group is claiming that the game is one of the top selling games of all time.

Unfortunately, given how secretive publishers are about game sales, no-one’s saying exactly how many copies it’s sold but it’s known to be well over 10 million, easily surpassing Dark Souls 3 as From’s best-selling game.

NPD also hasn’t clarified what the other nine games are in the top 10, but it’s likely to be a fairly dull list and mostly composed of Call Of Duty and Grand Theft Auto sequels.

Elden Ring’s achievement wasn’t even officially announced, just mentioned in a tweet from NPD analyst Mat Piscatella during the reporting of the sales charts for June.

As you can see below, Elden Ring was once again the best-selling game of the month and has been for four of its first five months on sale – the sort of performance you only usually see from a Rockstar game.

Admittedly, that has been helped by the lack of major new releases this summer, but the US charts are organised by revenue, not unit sales, so the game will already be extraordinarily profitable for both From and Bandai Namco.

That’s probably why we haven’t yet heard anything about DLC, as while From has always released it for their previous games there’s still no clue of if and when we might get more Elden Ring.

What will almost be more interesting is the effect all this is going to have on the rest of the games industry, considering Elden Ring is an extremely difficult and time-consuming game with zero microtransactions.

If those are the attributes that publishers are suddenly going to start copying, then the next few years are going to be very interesting indeed…
