Netflix’s You star Penn Badgley has revealed the show’s directors actually gave him advice on his masturbation technique for his role.
Penn plays creepy stalker and serial killer Joe Goldberg across the three seasons, and is in the works for the fourth.
Along the way, he’s stalked women, been stalked, and even became a father in the most recent season, all with a creepy voiceover revealing his inner, stalker-style thoughts and tendencies.
In many episodes, Penn partakes in graphic seasons of masturbation, which, he has now revealed, were criticised by the directors.
Speaking on the Stitcher’s Podcrushed podcast, as reported by The Daily Star, Penn admitted: ‘I’ve always gotten the note to make it less creepy.
‘They say like, “Close your eyes or go faster or go slower.”

‘I’m like, “What? This man is f***ing murdering people, and he’s masturbating in the street.
‘”You’re saying I’m making it creepy? How is it I’m the one making it creepy?!’”
Penn also revealed how ‘strange’ it was to film the scenes, especially after being criticised repeatedly for ‘keeping his eyes open’ while pretender to masturbate.

He added: ‘It’s a strange—you don’t think it’s going to be that big of a deal.
‘And then you discover in front of a crew of people with a camera on your face, knowing that, in all likelihood, millions of people are going to see this, you’re simulating masturbation.’
