Jeremy Clarkson has been met with fierce backlash after playing down fears over the current heatwave which has seen the UK public warned about the severe conditions.

The Grand Tour host couldn’t resist weighing in on the issue, claiming that while southern France is also dealing with soaring temperatures, there is no ‘warning in place’

He tweeted: ‘It’s very hot in the south of France but so far as I know, there’s no DefCon 8 level 3 killer death heatwave warning in place.’

When one follower pointed out that some countries are better equipped to deal with such heat, he replied: ‘Go and sit under a tree then.’

Others have blasted the former Top Gear star for his comments on France, with plenty of people pointing to France bracing itself for record temperatures, with forecasters putting 15 departments in the country on the highest alert for extreme temperatures.

Meanwhile fires have continued to rage across Portugal, neighbouring Spain, France and Croatia in the last 11 days

‘France is literally on fire Jeremy,’ wrote on follower, while another added: ‘How to tell everyone you’re an idiot without telling them you’re an idiot.’

A third person quipped: ‘There’s a surprise. Clarkson being a prize dingbat. Again.’

And a different Twitter user said: ‘France is literally burning to the ground with 16,000 already evacuated. 1,000 people have died in Spain & Portugal in recent days. Jeremy Clarkson is a dangerous, ignorant fool.’

Others seemed to agree with the AGE-year-old star, with one person calling out the public for complaining ‘about British weather’ and ‘crying’ over some sunshine.

‘They complain about British weather but when there’s a bit of sun for a week [they] start crying. Grab carling out fridge, bbq out, footy on, simple as,’ replied one user.

‘Totally agree,’ replied one person to Jeremy’s tweet, and another added: ‘Clarkson nails it.’

His comments come after the Met Office has forecast London could hit highs of 38°C when the heatwave sweeps across England this week.

The rise in temperatures has forced the UK Health Security Agency to announce a level 4 heat-health alert – described as an ’emergency’ – while the Met Office has issued the UK’s first red extreme heat warning, with both run from today until Wednesday.

London’s scorching temperatures mean the capital will be warmer than some of the hottest places in the world.

Meanwhile, College of Paramedics chief executive Tracy Nicholls told Sky News’s Sophy Ridge On Sunday programme: ‘This isn’t like a lovely hot day where we can put a bit of sunscreen on, go out and enjoy a swim and a meal outside.

‘This is serious heat that could actually, ultimately, end in people’s deaths because it is so ferocious. We’re just not set up for that sort of heat in this country.’
