‘If Gemma had been shown picking flowers alone in a meadow it might have been hard to make Luca’s mood evaporate’.

It looks like Luca Bish and Gemma Owen’s romance could be on the rocks, after the Love Island villa was left stunned during Movie Night.

The fan favourite feature saw the Islanders react to clips of goings on from previous weeks, and believe us when we say they saw everything, whether it was flirty behaviour or three-way kisses (Dami, we’re looking at you).

Up until now, Luca, 23, and Gemma, 19, have been solid, and it’s only been five minutes since they dropped the L-bomb.

However, things took a turn after Luca watched a movie of Casa Amor bombshell Billy Brown getting close to Gemma, who brushed him off and told him she can’t hug him because they are ‘mates’ and ‘mates don’t hug’.

Fishmonger Luca didn’t see it that way, though, especially after Billy admitted to being ‘confused’ and saying he wouldn’t try to flirt unless he thought he had a chance.

In short, Luca kicked off, while Gemma was adamant there was no wrongdoing on her part.

So, we asked our body language expert Judi James what she makes of the whole sitch, and what exactly was the sign that Luca was ready for war?

‘Movie Night was an emotional landfill site for Luca last night as he dumped all the niggles, doubts and insecurities he’s had about Gemma in one triggered outburst,’ Judi began.

‘The guy we saw on the first night in the villa, sitting up huddled and awake in his hoodie while the others slept was back at his post again after watching Gemma’s video, sitting puzzling and possibly brooding while other boys who might have deserved at least one night of guilt-prompted insomnia slept deep with their girls in their arms.’

She adds that Luca’s body language suggested he’d ‘already worked himself up into a state of emotional arousal and pessimistic expectation before he even saw Gemma’s behaviour on screen’.

‘In the build-up to the scenes, he’d possibly come out with the highest disapproval responses from the group when he was shown to be winding the guys up to behave badly, and this clearly didn’t help.’.

She reckons Luca thought of his behaviour as ‘laddish’, but this prompted ‘disgusted’ facial expressions from the girls and ‘accusations’ from the other guys who ‘saw his encouragement as something to hang blame on’.

‘Luca’s mood changed just before the video started, suggesting he was expecting nothing better than the worst,’ Judi adds, noting that his finger started to stab and his lower jaw jutted while he placed one hand on his leg in a partial splay that ‘suggested he was ready and braced for that “worst”.’

However, Luca seems to be alone in this fearing and expecting the worst about his relationship, which the body language guru thinks suggests inner low self-esteem and feelings that he’s ‘punching above his weight’ with Gemma – Judi clarifies that this is a ‘reason’ but not an ‘excuse’ for ‘jealous behaviour’.

She adds that what Luca actually saw on screen would probably have shocked the other guys by being so ‘lame’, since Andrew had watched Tasha literally cuddle up to another man in bed.

‘But, it was Luca kicking off at some non-existent flirt signals. He performed a tongue-poke of disgust as his head spun round to Gemma in a gesture of accusation’, she says.

‘He rubbed his lips before holding his balled hands in front of his down-turned mouth clamp. There were a couple of dismissive flicking gestures before he steepled his fingers’.

This last gesture in particular could be telling, since it’s ‘often associated with power or status’ and suggests he might have felt that his ‘righteous’ stance of impeccable behaviour somehow ‘raised his status with Gemma, especially if she apologised or tried to win him over’.

It would be an understatement to say that things are heating up in that villa, with emotions running high and some once unbreakable couples starting to crack.

These intense situations mean it’s understandable why feelings are magnified, so Judi explains that we shouldn’t judge the reactions of Islanders ‘by normal standards’.

‘Luca and Gemma have a playful relationship where they seem to love a bit of brinkmanship but it is also true that, once they get out, any fame could also be testing,’ she says.

‘It would be hard to imagine Luca ending things with Gemma as he is clearly besotted, but he needs to consider if he can cope in a more grown-up way once they are back out in public again as a couple.’

Love Island continues tonight at 9pm on ITV2.
