Love Island criticised for lack of closed captions for deaf contestant Tasha Ghouri during explosive Mad Movies: ‘Where is the support?’-Cydney Yeates-Entertainment – Metro

Love Island fans have criticised the ITV2 dating show for not using subtitles to accompany the clips shown to deaf contestant Tasha Ghouri during Mad Movies.

Tasha is the first-ever hearing impaired star to appear in the series and she wears a cochlear implant, a small electronic device that stimulates the nerve used for hearing, to help her hear.

Over the course of the last two episodes, the villa has been shown dramatic footage from all their Casa Amor week antics, with Luca Bish and Gemma Owen among the couples now on the rocks.

But eagle-eyed viewers noticed that there weren’t any captions to support the videos, and pointed out that this would have been helpful for Tasha.

Although Metro.co.uk understands Love Island producers have worked closely with Tasha to make sure she has the support she needs, fans couldn’t help but voice their upset at the lack of subtitles.

‘How are they going to have a deaf Islander and not have subtitles on the films?’ one asked. ‘ITV has shown no commitment to actual support or representation, they just used it for endless articles before the series started as always.’

‘Kinda disappointing that #LoveIsland didn’t even bother putting subtitles on their movie night clips for Tash, in case there was any question over ITV’s performative diversity,’ another added.

The criticism comes after Tasha’s dad revealed that it is ‘mentally draining’ for her to lip read and can ‘only hear robotic sounds’.

Taking aim at trolls who had sent her ableist abuse, he wrote: ‘It’s mentally draining for her trying to compute what’s been said, lip reading people whose lips aren’t facing her or whose mouths are covered with bottles [and] who said what when many are talking.

‘Staying involved in conversation when you can only hear robotic sounds in only one of your ears is mentally draining. This leads to tiredness and sometimes tears.

‘It’s a pressured environment for all but she has an extra pressure no one seems to recognise apart from anyone who is deaf or hard of hearing.’

Love Island airs tonight at 9pm on ITV2.
