Countdown has had its fair share of awkward moments over the years, but today’s incident might just have topped the lot.

The Channel 4 game show, which has aired over 7,000 episodes since 1982, pits two contestants against each other to test their knowledge of anagrams.

Every once in a while, the anagrams yield hilarious results.

Last week, Strictly Come Dancing’s Brendan Cole produced the word ‘scrotum’ from the jumble of letters.

Earlier today, viewers were treated to awkward smiles from presenters Rachel Riley and Colin Murray as they dealt with the latest anagram faux pas.

The contestants were asked to find the longest word they could from the letters ‘I N V A A G K S U’, and both contestants obliged – with funny results.

The first contestant to answer was Thomas, who produced a six-letter word: vagina. His rival Mike then produced a points-winning seven-letter word: vaginas.

Susie Dent, who has been a Countdown judge since 1992, let out a small smirk, while Colin Murray praised Mike for using a plural to boost his score.

‘There you go! What a difference – putting an “s” on. I mean, that’s the thing – always pluralise,’ he said.

Rachel, who replaced Carol Vorderman in 2009, appeared to direct her eyes to the viewers at home before raising her eyebrows.

Colin passed to Susie for further comment, and she suggested that another seven-letter word, iguanas, would have also been a winning answer.

Stationed over in Dictionary Corner, Susie sometimes provides viewers with the definition of a winning word, but chose not to on this occasion.

The hosts moved swiftly on to the next question, but viewers at home weren’t going pass up an opportunity for some light-hearted fun.

One viewer said: ‘Children all around the nation have looked at their parents with a quizzical look this afternoon and asked, “What’s a vaginas?” as the anagram word comes up on Countdown this afternoon!’

Noticing that the full letters board said ‘VAGINAS UK’, eagle-eyed viewers made more hilarious jokes of their own, including: ‘[Vaginas UK], so called because there was already a band in the US with the same name’.

You can watch Countdown on Channel 4 and All4 now.
