Freddie Flintoff was forced to miss the majority of filming Top Gear’s Thailand special after he tested positive for Covid during the trip, according to reports.

The 44-year-old former cricket star was set to enjoy a four-day jaunt in the Asian country but his plans were rudely derailed when he was struck down with the virus just 24 hours into the getaway.

‘Freddie’s trip to Thailand with Top Gear ended up as a disaster,’ an insider said.

The presenter had arrived in the country alongside fellow co-hosts Paddy McGuinness and Chris Harris, but he’ll be largely absent from the special due to being forced to isolate.

‘Freddie was fine for the first 24 hours but after he started feeling unwell on the second day, he did a test and it came back positive,’ the source continued.

‘He did all the right things and drove himself to his hotel, where he stayed in his room until he tested negative.

‘And luckily, his symptoms weren’t too bad. But for Freddie, this was the worst thing that could have happened.’

The source added to The Sun that Freddie was ‘so excited’ about filming and ended up locked inside his hotel room.

‘His absence will be mentioned when the show comes out later this year.’

Freddie’s co-hosts have also been reminding the former sports star about ‘what he was missing’ on their adventure in Thailand.

While he was shut indoors, Paddy and Chris sent him loads of videos which no doubt didn’t help his fomo.

‘Freddie took it all in good humour but Paddy and Chris are going to be ribbing him about this for a long time to come.’

Metro.co.uk has contacted Freddie’s reps for comment.
