As the family and friends of Dame Deborah James celebrate her life today at her funeral, supporters can find the final piece of her ‘rebellious hope’ in Bowelbabe’s second and final book.

In May, Dame Deborah announced that she had written another memoir-style self-help book titled How to Live When You Could Be Dead and said she was ‘gutted’ that she wouldn’t see it in print.

The You, Me and the Big C podcaster died at the age of 40 in June after battling grade four bowel cancer for five years.

The inspirational campaigner worked tirelessly throughout her diagnosis to raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of bowel cancer and raise vital funds for progressive cancer treatment.

In the final weeks of her life, Dame Deborah launched her legacy the Bowel Babe Fund and which has raised £7.4million for Cancer Research UK and the Royal Marsden Hospital as well as an additional £500,000 through charitable donations from her clothing line with InTheStyle.

Dame Deborah’s latest and final book is an exploration of how she found the ability to ‘live not knowing if’ she ‘had a tomorrow.’

What is How To Live When You Could Be Dead by Deborah James about?

How To Live When You Could Be Dead is an honest and powerful reflection on mortality, as Dame Deborah shares how she was able to ‘flip’ her mindset from a negative spiral to find ‘realistic and rebellious hope.’

The synopsis in Dame Deborah’s voice reads: ‘I’m alive when I should be dead. In another movie, I missed the sliding door and departed this wondrous life long ago.

‘Like so many others, I’ve had to learn to live not knowing if I have a tomorrow, because, statistically, I shouldn’t have.’

She reveals: ‘At the age of 35, I was blindsided by incurable bowel cancer – I was given a less than 8% chance of surviving five years. More than five years later, my only option is to live in the now and to value one day at a time.’

Dame Deborah adds: ‘It will awaken you to question your life as if you didn’t have a tomorrow and live it in the way you want to today.

‘It will show you how to build a positive mindset and, through this, invite you to think about what you could do if you believed you could do anything you want.’

The publication was brought forward from its original January 2023 release when Dame Deborah announced that she didn’t have long left to live in May.

For every book that is sold in the UK, £3 of that money will be donated through the Bowelbabe Fund to Cancer Research UK to support the vital initiatives that Dame Deborah campaigned so fervently for.
