Good Morning Britain bosses have shared an update on Kate Garraway’s return to the show after her husband Derek Draper was taken to hospital.
The 55-year-old presenter is taking some time away from the ITV programme after Derek, 54, was taken to hospital on Tuesday morning.
He has battled ongoing health issues since falling ill with Covid in March 2020 and subsequently falling into a coma.
Derek was released from hospital in April 2021 and now receives round-the-clock care at home, where he lives with Kate and their two children, but a source revealed earlier today that he was taken back to hospital and in a ‘very serious condition’.
Now sharing an update on Kate’s future with GMB, an ITV spokesperson told Metro.co.uk: ‘Kate is taking some time off work over the next few days, and is hoping to be back to her normal presenting duties as soon as possible.’
According to an insider, the family are ‘very worried’ about Derek but are reassured that he is ‘in the best hands’.

They added to The Sun: ‘Kate is by his side and is keeping it together as best she can. She’s a total professional and devoted to her work – both on Good Morning Britain and Smooth – but she had no choice but to step away this week to be there with him.
‘This is an incredibly difficult time for her and their family.’
Covid affected Derek’s ability to communicate, which caused damage to many of his organs. Kate has released two documentaries charting her life caring for the former political lobbyist, who she married in 2005.
In June, Kate opened up about how their marriage has changed amid Derek’s health issues, and said the couple were learning to be husband and wife again.
She told Good Housekeeping magazine: ‘When you nearly lose someone, it certainly brings everything into sharp focus. In many ways, we’re still learning how we are as man and wife, as so much has changed.
‘It’s the same for the children – they’re having to relearn the experience of being with their dad. And, of course, the biggest learning is for poor Derek.’
Good Morning Britain airs weekdays at 6am on ITV.
