Batman comic book writer Alan Grant has died, his family have confirmed.

The acclaimed writer, who also worked on the likes of Judge Dredd and other iconic comic books throughout his career, died this week at the age of 73.

His wife, Susan Grant, broke the sad news on social media on Thursday morning, saying she had ‘no words’ to describe her grief.

Writing on Facebook, she wrote: ‘I have no words. Alan died this morning.’

The writer’s family and friends have been inundated with condolences from fans, some of whom had followed his career since he joined the 2000 AD family four decades ago.

One fan, Graeme Small, paid tribute to Grant on social media, saying his work with fellow comic book writer John Wagner was ‘unparalleled, and his runs on Batman and Lobo were, simply put, some of the best the medium had ever seen.’

The creator had previously been one of the main writers of the Batman series for years

He added that beyond his skills as a writer, Grant’s ‘hilarious stories, his wicked sense of humour, his kindness, his approachability.’

Another devastated fan and friend, Ivor Davis, said he was aware the writer had been ‘unwell for some time’ and offered his condolences to the family.

He described Grant as ‘a lovely guy, a pillar of the local community in Moniaive for several years, but also for at least a couple of decades, Alan was THE Batman writer, and, with John Wagner, THE writer on Judge Dredd.’

He added: ‘R.I.P Alan, you were one of a kind.’

One friend, John Chalmers, shared a tribute to Grant which was shared by Susan to her own Facebook page. It described the writer as ‘a lovely man, down to earth and generous with his knowledge and experience, one of the nicest people in comics that we have met.

‘His achievements in modern comics speak for themselves and he was a fantastic ambassador for Scottish comics.’

Grant is understood to have been ill for a while

Another described Grant as ‘a great man and a legend,’ while one said he was ‘one of the most beloved and lovable comic book writers.’

‘He was a kind soul with a warm heart. He was a mentor and a friend,’ another said, while yet another agreed he was a ‘legend,’ adding: ‘Legends never truly die.’

Scottish writer Grant was born in Bristol but raised in Midlothian; he eventually settled in Moniaive, Dumfriesshire with his wife.
