Cher has revealed she suffered three miscarriages in her lifetime, including one aged just 18 which left her ‘screaming in pain.’

The musician and actress, 76, has been vocal with her concerns that the US Supreme Court overturned Roe v Wade, leading to abortion bans in swathes of the country.

Now the Believe singer has opened up about suffering miscarriages in the past and questioned what might have happened to her had they happened now.

Taking to Twitter this week, Cher revealed: ‘When I was young I had 3 miscarriages.’

She explained she had her first miscarriage when she was just 18 years old, before the landmark ruling was even introduced.

‘I was alone in our house,’ she recalled. By the time then-partner Sonny Bono came home she was ‘sobbing’ and ‘rocking on our floor.’

Cher recalled that when she was seen by a doctor she was ‘screaming in pain’ and was sent straight to the hospital and into the operating room.

The star did not go into detail about her later two miscarriages but asked pointedly: ‘WHAT WOULD HAPPEN 2 ME TODAY (sic)?’

Cher currently lives in California, where abortion remains legal, but as a child and teenager regularly moved with her mother, and spent time living in Texas, where abortion is now illegal.

Activists have claimed that the introduction of strict abortion bans in certain parts of the country could lead to a woman being accused of purposely terminating her pregnancy should she be found to be suffering a miscarriage.

In other cases, pregnant people could be forced to carry a non-viable pregnancy to term as abortions – even in the case where a foetus could not survive outside of the womb – would not be allowed.

A recent case saw mother-of-one Marlena Stella, who lives in Texas, forced to carry her dead foetus for two weeks even after being told there was no heartbeat.

She told CNN the state’s anti-abortion laws meant they had to ‘schedule another ultrasound to verify that this pregnancy is not valid’ before she could have the surgery to remove the foetus.

Others have pointed to cases similar to Ireland’s Savita Halappanavar, who died of sepsis in 2012 after being refused a termination on account that the foetus she was miscarrying still had a heartbeat.

Her death and the resulting outcry eventually helped to secure abortion rights in Ireland, which were introduced in 2018.
