A bloodied and bruised Chris Jericho was stretchered out of the arena after AEW Dynamite went off the air followed his brutal Barbed Wire Everywhere deathmatch.
The WWE legend was battling his longtime rival Eddie Kingston in the main event of Wednesday night’s Fyter Fest special and even picked up the win in the intense and brutal bout, which saw the ring surrounded by barbed wire in various forms.
Jericho, 51, won after Sammy Guevara interfered, leaving Kingston open to the Judas Effect for the victory.
Despite the big win, the former world champion found himself needing to be stretchered out after Kingston went on the attack and threw him from the ring apron to a spiders web of barbed wire on the arena floor.
After losing the bout, the popular star looked disappointed while Jericho was in clear pain, and once the show went off air he was pulled from the tangled mess of metal and helped to the back by the medical team.
Jericho brought back his facepainted Painmaker persona for the match, and he shared a gruesome selfie backstage, showing that he was still standing.
He tweeted: ‘BLOOD WILL FOLLOW BLOOD!!! #ThePainmaker always wins….deal with it! @AEW #BarbwireEverywhere (sic)’
Unfortunately, the match seemed to split viewers, with plenty of fans on social media voicing their disappointment in the bout itself, and the ending.
‘This is truly, excruciatingly, painful. It’s like Jericho hit my eyes with the barbed wire,’ wrote one viewer, while another added: ‘Jericho bleed and ended up landing in barbed wire for a dull AF match that no one will remember by next week. (sic)’
Another said: ‘Wished Eddie would come out as the winner. Eddie shouldn’t have continued to wrestle/stand up after Jericho pined him because after all this was a barbed wire match at it is supposed to take a huge toll on your body and not stand up to beat your opponent after he beat you! (sic)’
Others praised the brutality and dedication of the performers, while admitting the ending left a sour taste.
AEW Dynamite airs Wednesday nights at 1am on Fite TV.
