BBC Breakfast turned a little awkward after Charlie Stayt tried (and failed) to channel his inner Paul Hollywood and savagely destroyed a Bake Off star’s dessert.
The 60-year-old presenter and co-host Naga Munchetty were joined by Great British Bake Off stars Makbul Patel, who featured in the Channel 4 wholesome baking competition in 2020, as well as series one winner Ed Kemper.
As well as discussing the new Bake Off musical, Makbul brought some desserts for the hosts to taste.
Cutting into a tart, Charlie tried to impersonate the famous Bake Off host as he said: ‘When Paul Hollywood does this, he goes in with real gusto doesn’t he?
‘It looks like he attacks the bakes doesn’t he? I’m going to try and do a Paul Hollywood style cut.’
Meanwhile, Naga was delicately carving into a gateau, while Charlie continued to savagely chop-up the tart in front of Makbul.

Makbul began explaining Paul’s ‘gusto’ cut, saying: ‘Well I think he wants to try and see the consistency of what we’ve made.’
But Charlie continued: ‘No he does do that, do you know what I mean? He just gets in there and he hammers it in,’ prompting Makbul to almost agree: ‘I have noticed it.’

Naga, trying to save the situation, interrupted with: ‘He doesn’t stab it!’
Things turned awkward when Makbul jokingly confessed: ‘I’m sorry but this is sending me heart palpitations, can you not do that… it’s precious.’
As Charlie clearly realised he’d ruined the dessert (and the moment), Makbul back-tracked, saying: ‘I’m only joking, but you were a bit brutal there as well, but I’m only joking.’

The Great British Bake Off musical is premiering today and will run for two weeks in Cheltenham, with producers keeping their fingers crossed it will transfer to the West End.
Following the format of the beloved Channel 4 programme, the musical sees eight amateur bakers compete to impress two judges and battle their way to be crowned champion star baker.

Each of the bakers will tell their own stories throughout the show, as well as face trials, tribulations and baking fails along the way.
In the teaser, the wannabe pastry chefs are seen heading to their stations, ready to bake up a storm and barely containing their delight at being in the famous tent.
