Christine McGuinness and Paddy McGuinness have confirmed they are separating after 11 years of marriage.
The couple – who share twins Penelope and Leo, nine, and Felicity, six – are still living together in their family home, but made the decision to split after enduring a ‘very difficult time’ recently.
In a joint statement, they announced: ‘We hadn’t planned on sharing this publicly until we were ready but after the lack of privacy surrounding our personal life, we feel left with no other option but to clarify.
‘A while ago we took the difficult decision to separate but our main focus as always is to continue loving and supporting our children. This was not an easy decision to make but we’re moving forward as the best parents we can be for our three beautiful children’
They added: ‘We’ll always be a loving family, we still have a great relationship and still live happily in our family home together. We hope this now draws a line under any more unwanted and unnecessary intrusion into our private life.
‘Although we work in the public eye we ask kindly if you could respect our wishes for privacy on this matter. We’ll be making no further comments. Loads of love. Paddy & Christine.’
Following the pair’s announcement, let’s take a look back on their romance…
Christine and Paddy McGuiness’ relationship
The pair were introduced by a mutual friend at an event and soon hit it off.
On Christmas Eve 2010, Paddy popped the question.
Recalling the moment in her autobiography, Christine wrote: ‘On Christmas Eve 2010, when I was 23, something quite amazing happened. I was sitting by the fire with Patrick and we were getting in the festive spirit and opening presents together.
‘In the middle of the excitement, he disappeared. Eventually, he returned to the lounge and presented me with a Christmas card; “To my fiancée,” it read. “I’m not your fiancée, you idiot,” I joked.
‘And when I looked up, he was there with a stunning diamond ring – down on one knee.’
In June 2011, Christine and Paddy became husband and wife.
They married at Thornton Manor in Cheshire with 200 guests in attendance, including Rick Astley as a performer.
Paddy had Peter Kay as his best man, with Christine later sharing that they had known one another since they were kids.
In 2013, the couple welcomed their first children together – twins Leo and Penelope, who are now nine.
In 2016, Christine gave birth to her and Paddy’s third child, Felicity, who is now six.
In 2018, photos emerged of Paddy holding hands with Nicola Appleton on a night out.
He was seen ‘arm in arm’ with the All Saints singer, and while nothing more is known about what might have happened, Christine recalled how the pictures made her feel in her book.
‘I felt physically sick. I ran to the toilet to vomit,’ she wrote.
‘Still to this day I can remember that absolutely awful pit-of-your-stomach feeling.’
Despite feeling ‘devastated’, she forgave her husband for the sake of their family.
All three of Christine and Paddy’s children are autistic. The couple have been open about their journey as a family, both on their podcast and in a documentary.
Paddy previously described the early days pre-diagnosis as ‘really tough’, saying they hardly let anyone else inside their home.
The Top Gear presenter himself went on to struggle with depression, with Christine later learning that she too is autistic.
‘My focus is always on the children, and if there’s any way my diagnosis of autism can help them, that’s brilliant,’ she has said.
Rumours of a marriage rift first emerged when fans believed Paddy had removed his tattoo dedicated to his wife.
Later, however, she denied speculation and assured the couple were ‘really good’.
The Take Me Out host announced his split from the TV star on July 22, 2022.
They asked for privacy while dealing with the matter and said they are still living together, wanting ‘the best for our children’.
