A leaked image from the FIFA 23 website seems to confirm that EA and Marvel are working together for the first time in over 10 years.

Crossovers seem to have become the go-to method to get people interested in long-running video games. The likes of Fortnite, Call Of Duty, and Fall Guys routinely announce new collaborations to surprise us with and, if a recent leak is to be believed, FIFA is getting into it as well.

Earlier today, an image began circulating on social media of a promotional image for this year’s FIFA 23. Specifically, it’s for something called Heroes and features both the game’s logo and the logo for none other than Marvel.

We wouldn’t blame you for assuming this was just a very convincing fake, but there’s a reason some believe this is legitimate. If you type ‘FIFA 23 heroes’ into Google Images, the second result is the aforementioned picture with the official FIFA 23 website credited as the source.

Clicking on it takes you to the page for FIFA 23’s Ultimate Team mode and its FUT Heroes, cards that represent particularly famous football players from across the sport’s history.

There’s obviously no sign of the Marvel logo, but the fact that EA’s website is listed as the source suggests that this is official and not some bizarre ruse. Although it’d be a weird one to make up just for clout.

The next question to ask is what form this Marvel crossover will take. The immediate assumption is that certain Marvel characters will be added as players who you can recruit for your team in the Ultimate Team mode.

Except the FIFA games have always been based in reality. They’re football simulators, not outlandish, cartoony experiences like Fortnite. The older Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater games did have Marvel characters like Iron Man and Wolverine as unlockable skaters but that’s not really the same thing.

Having these comic book icons running across a football pitch alongside real-life players would look weird and ruin the balance of the gameplay, so what’s most likely is that this is an extension of the FUT Heroes cards from FIFA 22.

These showed famous players in invented superhero costumes but didn’t affect how they looked or played on the pitch. So The best guess for what the Marvel collaboration will be, is that they’ll now be dressed up like ‘real’ superheroes.

EA and Marvel working together has happened before, too. In 2005, EA published the Marvel Nemesis: Rise Of The Imperfects fighting game as part of its partnership with the comics company.

The game reviewed poorly, however, and was the only thing to come out of the collobration, with EA and Marvel terminating it a few years later.

Whatever the case, we can’t imagine the FIFA player base is demanding that FIFA 23 go the Fortnite route and add outlandish crossovers.

FIFA 23 launches on September 30 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Nintendo Switch, Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, PC, and Stadia.
