Josie Gibson has shared an update on her son’s health after he suffered a grisly injury and had to go to hospital, showering the ‘amazing’ medical workers with praise.

A new report has been released highlighting ‘chronic staffing issues’ in the NHS, with MPs saying in the document that the health service is facing its ‘greatest workforce crisis in its history’.

The study shone a spotlight on big shortages of hospitals doctors, nurses and midwives in their thousands, while also criticising the lack of flexible working and access to hot food and drink during shifts.

On Monday’s This Morning, Josie, her co-host Craig Doyle were joined by guests Gyles Brandreth and Matthew Wright to discuss the latest headlines, with the concerns about the NHS prompting Josie to bring up her recent experience in hospital, after her three-year-old son Reggie-James was involved in a ‘trampoline ladder’ accident.

‘I just spent a night in hospital and I was just in awe of their 12-hour shifts,’ the 37-year-old said.

‘They were so short-staffed in theatre that Reggie’s surgeon – he’s just had to have metal wires in his arm – couldn’t have a lunch break. And I just think credit to them, how amazing to keep doing your job when you’ve got all this in a crumbled system. We need to fix it for them, it’s not fair on them.’

When asked how Reggie is doing now, Josie responded: ‘He’s really, really good and I can’t thank everybody in the NHS enough.’

She added that she ‘would have paid anything’ for his treatment if necessary.

Reggie’s accident occurred while he and Josie were at their home, with the young boy taken to the local hospital after he broke a bone in his arm.

Josie shared a picture of her son’s X-ray on Instagram, writing: ‘Thank you to the super talented theatre @ruhbath.’

She continued: ‘You’ve put my little prince back together again. Reg has a new terminator arm.’

In a second post on her Instagram Story, she posted a picture of the youngster as Iron Man, stating: ‘Reggie-James is Iron Man.’

Josie shares Reggie-James with her former partner Terry. The couple separated four months after their son’s birth.

Following the release of the report delving into the NHS, a Department of Health and Social Care spokesperson said: ‘We are growing the health and social care workforce, with over 4,000 more doctors, and 9,600 more nurses compared to last year, and over 1,400 more doctors in general practice compared to March 2019.

‘As we continue to deliver on our commitment to recruit 50,000 more nurses by 2024, we are also running a £95 million recruitment drive for maternity services and providing £500 million to develop our valued social care workforce, including through training opportunities and new career pathways.

‘We have commissioned NHS England to develop a long term workforce plan to recruit and support NHS staff while they deliver high quality, safe care to patients and help to bust the Covid backlogs.’

This Morning airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
