It is incredibly fitting, if we do say so ourselves, that Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson has discovered he’s had a Great White named after him during Shark Week.

Yes, dear reader, it’s that auspicious time of year when our toothy pals of the sea descend on our screens for Discovery’s Shark Week.

It’s the annual, week long TV programming block at the network, featuring shark-based programming, which originally premiered in 1988. And this year, Dwayne has been christened as the first Master of Ceremonies of the event.

So it makes sense he has a namesake shark, non?

The Atlantic White Shark Conservancy shared the news with the WWE and Hollywood legend, informing him on Twitter alongside a series of images of Shark The Rock: ‘@TheRock there is a white shark named after you!

‘This tough shark had an injury on its dorsal fin but our research team was able to see the injury heal over time! If you ever come to the East Coast, we would love to have you and try to meet your shark! #SharkWeek2022 @SharkWeek.’

That’s a gnarly injury we don’t often see on the apex predator.
Good to see the recovery!
I’d be honored to meet #TheRock🦈 one day. Thanks for the tweet 🙏🏾#SharkWeek https://t.co/w0pKhqGUej

Human The Rock was incredibly taken aback by the move, insisting he must meet his watery pal one day.

He wrote: ‘That’s a gnarly injury we don’t often see on the apex predator. Good to see the recovery!

‘I’d be honored to meet #TheRock🦈 one day. Thanks for the tweet 🙏🏾’

Chiming in for a bite of the action, Shark Week’s account wrote: ‘It’s only right for the #SharkWeek Master of Ceremonies to have a Great White named after him! 🦈’

In case you missed the melting temperatures of last week, summer has well and truly arrived and of course that means getting the swimwear out, heading to the beach and taking a dip, right? Well, not if you’re a fan of Shark Week.

The biggest TV event of the year for shark nuts splashed onto our screens earlier this week and, frankly, looking at the content plan it’s the most WTF Shark Week to date.

Naturally, the Jackass boys are back after one of their own cast members, Poppie, was actually bitten by a shark during their last programme for the special.

Joining them on the bill is Stranger Things star Noah Schnapp, who will be diving to the bottom of the ocean to find the ‘strangest sharks’ out there.

There’s also a show called Pigs vs Shark, which probably says all you need to know.

Speaking about his role, Dwayne previously mused: ‘I’m honoured to be your first-ever Shark Week Master of Ceremonies.

‘Our Seven Bucks Productions has partnered with Discovery to bring you a very special (and badass) Shark Week.

‘I filmed exclusively in my home state of Hawaii, these beautiful predators, Aumakua (Gods), are deeply revered and respected in our Polynesian culture.’

Shark Week currently airs on Discovery.
