Gemma Chan has opened up on her private relationship with boyfriend of four years, Dominic Cooper, calling herself ‘really, really lucky’.

The acting couple have kept things low-key since making their public debut as a couple, after months of dating speculation, at the Fashion Awards afterparty in December 2018.

The Crazy Rich Asians star, who will next be seen in Harry Styles thriller flick Don’t Worry Darling, gushed over her ‘incredibly supportive’ boyfriend in a new interview that gave a little peek inside their romance.

‘I think I’m so fortunate to be in a relationship where we can talk about anything,’ the 39-year-old revealed.

Gemma, who worked hard to raise awareness of a GoFundMe initiative to support east and south-east Asian communities in the UK as part of the national #StopAsianHate campaign, also discussed the responsibility she felt to speak out on behalf of her community during the pandemic.

‘Dom was very understanding and empathetic. I was quite open about how I was feeling during that time, and he was just incredibly supportive,’ she told Harper’s Bazaar UK.

‘I definitely didn’t feel I had to shoulder everything on my own. I’m really, really lucky.’

Gemma, who previously said that before her breakthrough part in 2018 megahit Crazy Rich Asians she was ‘never considered for lead roles’, also touched on how the power structures still inherent in the film industry make it ‘really difficult to speak up’.

‘I know you can be penalised in a way that means your livelihood has gone. Even if you try to do the right thing, speaking up against bad behaviour, all it takes is someone to interpret what you say the wrong way, or decide that you’re trouble,’ she said.

The Eternals star also blasted the industry for being ‘hierarchical’ and stoking fear as ‘traditionally, bad behaviours have been indulged’.

The actress has had upcoming biopic on Anna May Wong, considered the first Chinese-American Hollywood actress, in the works since 2014, for which she will both executive produce and act in the lead role.

Wong’s career spanned film, television, stage and radio and featured roles alongside the likes of Marlene Dietrich until she died in 1961.

Drawing comparisons with the racism and stereotyping that Wong faced in Hollywood in her day, Gemma mused that ‘her struggles and triumphs are reflective of the conversations we’re still having now’.

Labelling the Golden Age star as ‘incredibly witty’ and ‘a fighter’, the Brit added that she hoped the movie ‘will capture the complex woman she was’.

The September issue of Harper’s Bazaar UK is on sale from 28 July. Don’t Worry Darling releases in cinemas on September 23.
