Hollywood film and TV star Mary Alice has died, the New York Police Department has confirmed.

The actress, who was best known for her roles in NBC’s A Different World and the musical drama Sparkle, died on Wednesday, according to officials.

Alice’s age at the time of her death is unconfirmed, with various outlets reporting 86 and 81.

Born Mary Alice Smith in Indianola, Mississippi, Alice began her stage career in her hometown.

She made her screen debut in the 1974 film The Education of Sonny Carson and went on to feature in the television shows Police Woman and Sanford and Son.

Alice played Leticia ‘Lettie’ Bostic in the American sitcom A Different World from 1987, when the series first aired, to the end of its second season in 1989.

In 1993, Alice won an Emmy Award for outstanding supporting actress in a drama series for her performance in I’ll Fly Away, a TV drama set in the 1960s.

Alice also appeared in The Matrix Revolutions (2003), playing the role of the Oracle, replacing Gloria Foster.

Tributes have been flooding in for the late actress since news of her death emerged.
