Stranger Things star Jamie Campbell Bower praised over honest post about addiction battle: ‘I’m so grateful to be sober’-Ruth Lawes-Entertainment – Metro

Stranger Things star Jamie Campbell Bower has detailed his battle with addiction that at point ‘got so bad’ he was hospitalised.
The actor, 33, joined Stranger Things in season four as the monster Vecna, easily the most terrifying villain the show has seen so far.
In turn, he’s become one of the biggest rising stars of the year but in a candid Twitter post, Jamie opened up about his struggles after being seven and a half years sober.
He wrote: ‘12 and a half years ago I was in active addiction. Hurting myself and those around me who I loved the most.
‘It got so bad that eventually I ended up in a hospital for mental health.
‘I am now 7 1/2 years clean and sober. I have made many mistakes in my life.’
Sharing support and kind words for fans that may also be dealing with addiction, Jamie reassured them ‘there’s a way’ to recover, adding he was ‘so grateful’ to be sober.
Jamie penned: ‘But each day is a chance to start again. Atone for mistakes and grow.

‘For anyone who wakes up thinking “oh god not again” I promise you there’s a way.
‘I’m so grateful to be where I am, I’m so grateful to be sober. I’m so grateful to be.
‘Remember, we are all works in progress. J x’

Fans flocked to comment on Jamie’s tweet, praising his honesty and for raising awareness of addiction.
One follower wrote: ‘hey, look at u go, proud of u n how far u have come.’
Another shared: ‘I can’t explain how proud I’m of you, you’re so strong. We all make mistakes, we’re supposed to, because we’re humans and nobody is perfect. The most important thing is that you’re okay now and we are so proud of you, we love you and we’ll always supporting you.’
Saying ‘mistakes are what make us good people’, a fan added: ‘You are a good person and I am proud of you and I will always support you.’

London-born Jamie began to make a name for himself as an actor in 2010, around the time he was coping with addiction.
He became known for his roles in the Twilight and Harry Potter films, and was engaged to his costar, Ginny Weasley actress, Bonnie Wright.
Stranger Things will be back for a season five – but not for a while. For those of you who have seen season four, you’ll know he’s got a pretty big part to play in it…
