As we’re all very much aware by now, Beyonce is back with a brand new album and it is brilliant.

Both the Beyhive and the critics are raving about the joyous and powerful record, which features everything that makes Beyoncé one of the most successful artists in the world.

And sure, it’s early days, but we don’t think it’s a stretch to say that Beyoncé could be up for Album of the Year at the next Grammy awards – especially with her track record.

Considering the star has had previous three number one albums in the UK, and Renaissance’s lead single Break My Soul is still sitting pretty in the top 10 weeks after its release, we think the album is definitely in the running.

But with the likes of Harry Styles, Adele and Ed Sheeran all eligible to be nominated, it’s far from guaranteed.

So, what are the other best-selling albums so far this year and which could Renaissance be up against for Album of the Year at the Grammys?

Harry Styles – Harry’s House

We don’t have to tell you how popular Harry Styles is, or how well his new album is doing.

It’s likely that as soon as you read his name, you heard the incredibly catchy track As It Was begin playing in your head.

The lead single reigned supreme on the top spot of the charts for weeks and weeks on end, being momentarily overtaken by Kate Bush’s Running Up That Hill and, eventually, Lizzo’s About Damn Time.

Other Harry’s House singles, Late Night Talking and Music For A Sushi Restaurant also performed well, peaking in second and third in the UK charts respectively.

The 28-year-old is a massively respected musician, and Harry’s House is almost a shoe-in for an Album of the Year nomination.

Adele – 30

The only thing slightly comparable to the fanfare around Beyoncé’s return to music is Adele’s, just a few months prior.

Hello singer Adele broke away from her six-year hiatus in January when she dropped her fourth studio album, 30 – and everyone, understandably, went pretty wild.

Lead single Easy On Me captured the hearts of listeners around the world, and sat at number one in the UK charts for an incredible eight weeks.

Her second two songs released, Oh My God and I Drink Wine, peaked at number two and four respectively, but there could still be more to come from the Londoner.

Adele already has 15 Grammy awards, including two for Album of the Year (!) and based on the glowing reviews for her latest album, another could conceivably could be on the way.

Kendrick Lamar – Mr Morale & The Big Steppers

Kendrick Lamar released his jaw-dropping third studio album Mr Morale & The Big Steppers in May 2022 to massive commercial and critical acclaim.

Critics were left in awe at the vulnerable, intense record which deals with the trauma handed down through families, Black families in particular.

Mr Morale & The Big Steppers was praised for its contrasting rage and tenderness, sprawling lyrics and intense beat, with many calling it his best album to date.

The 34-year-old’s previous most recent album, 2017’s Damn, won the Pulitzer Prize for music, becoming the first non-jazz or classical work to do so

Kendrick has already been nominated for the 2022 MTV VMAs, and he’s almost certainly in the running for the Grammy’s Album of the Year.

Lizzo – Special

The absolute icon that is Lizzo returned this year with her new album Special, and honestly, it is.

Her lead single – About Damn Time – slowly crept up the charts, eventually knocking off Harry Styles’ As It Was, which to that point appeared would never happen.

Having burst onto the scene in 2019 with breakthrough album Cuz I Love You, which featured the airwave-stealing Truth Hurts, Lizzo has become one of the most beloved artists of the 21st century.

Special was released in July 2022 and is currently sitting pretty at number two in the US charts.

With plenty more singles to come from the album, and the initial positive reception, Lizzo could certainly be in the running for the 2023 Album of the Year.

Ed Sheeran – = (Equals)

Ed Sheeran’s = (Equals) album may have been released in late 2021, but it’s still eligible for the 2023 Album of the Year at the Grammys – which could cause problems for Beyoncé.

Halfway through 2022, Ed’s Equals is still the top-selling album of the year, with Official Charts reporting in July that it had sold over 256,000 copies.

His lead track, Shivers, spent a total of four weeks in the top spot, and a jaw-dropping 45 weeks overall in the charts.

He followed this up with festive track Merry Christmas, on which he collaborated with Elton John, and then a second number one hit Sausage Rolls For Everyone – a charity single based on his Christmas track.

This was followed by two consecutive tracks which both charted at number two – and Ed hasn’t finished releasing singles just yet.

The star has been nominated for a Grammy a total of 15 times, winning four – including for Record of the Year in 2012.
