The new PS5 version of What Remains Of Edith Finch is free if you bought the original but not if you got it via PS Plus.

There’re many advantages for Xbox being run by the biggest company in the world, from being able to make multi-billion dollar purchases at a whim to not being so focused on profits. Another is that Xbox can afford to be very generous with its upgrade policies, which is something Sony struggles with.

The problem has happened before, with PS Plus games like Resident Evil 7 and Persona 5 Royal, where although there’s a free upgrade to the PlayStation 5 version if you bought the PlayStation 4 edition separately, that doesn’t follow if you got it through PS Plus.

It’s never clear whether this is more Sony or the publisher’s fault, when this sort of thing happens, but PS Plus subscribers are already complaining about What Remains Of Edith Finch suffering the same problem, and hoping for some kind of U-turn.

The controversy is a shame because the last gen original was one of the best games of 2017 and not only one of the best narrative titles of recent years but one of the best-looking and most imaginative indie titles.

The new version was announced last night during an E3-esque preview event by publisher Annapurna Interactive, with the new Xbox Series X and PlayStation 5 editions available right now.

So too is a PC version of former PlayStation exclusive Hohokum, while Xbox Series X/S and PlayStation 5 versions of Outer Wilds will be available on September 15. These are described merely as ‘native ports’ though, so don’t expect too much in terms of graphical improvements.

The updates are free if you already own the last gen versions, and there’ll also be a Nintendo Switch edition at ‘a later date’.

The excellent The Pathless will also be available on Xbox and Nintendo Switch this winter, along with Maquette. Meanwhile, Solar Ash launches on Steam on December 6 and Game Pass this winter.

There were also several new game announcements during the event, and we advise watching the whole thing below, as it includes a look at co-op title Flock, cowboy mech game Bounty Star, dinosaur-themed survival horror The Lost Wild, and a tease of a new game from Katamari Damacy creator Keita Takahashi.

The showcase also includes updates on previously announced games Hindsight and Thirsty Suitors, as well as announcements of development partnerships with Kentucky Route Zero creator Cardboard Computer and If Found… developer DREAMFEEL.
