It truly is the end of an era as the good neighbours turned good friends of Ramsay Street said farewell this week.

The long-running Australian soap, Neighbours, had to pull the plug as the show was unable to find alternative funding after Channel 5 decided to stop broadcasting it.

The iconic Aussie soap has made stars out of the likes of Kylie Minogue, Jason Donovan, Margot Robbie, Guy Pearce and Natalie Imbruglia – all of whom made appearances in the final.

How did Neighbours wrap up after 37 years on air?

What happened in the Neighbours finale?

Despite most of the headlines focusing on the return of Charlene and Scott – or Kylie and Jason – who took a road trip back to Ramsay Street, the Neighbours finale did also see a lot of storylines wrap up neatly.

Long-time character Toadie (Ryan Moloney) got his happy ending when he said ‘I do’ to Mel.

Melanie Pearson (Lucinda Cowden) was another legacy Neighbours character who returned to the show before the finale was announced.

She first appeared in 1987, leaving in 1991, and then coming back again in 2021.

Marrying Toadie was a great opportunity for loads of former characters to wish the happy couple well on their nuptials, with a string of video messages acting as a reunion for those who couldn’t physically make it back for the finale.

These included Libby (Kym Valentine), Billy (Jesse Spencer), Donna (Margot Robbie) and Nina (Delta Goodrem).

Elsewhere in the final, Flick Scully (Holly Valance) and Beth Brennan (Natalie Imbruglia) were shown connecting over a Facebook group for ex-residents of Ramsay Street.

The closing moments of the show belonged to long-time favourites Karl Kennedy (Alan Fletcher) and Susan Kennedy (Jackie Woodburne), however.

Susan looks around the street, now filled with faces old and new, and delivered an emotional monologue.

‘How do you begin to describe a street?’ Susan ponders, before going on to talk about the ‘legendary legacy’ of the early inhabitants of Ramsay Street – the Robinsons, the Ramsays.

As she thoughtfully talked about finding love and dealing with loss on the street, the cast all come together as Toadie lets go of a heart-shaped balloon that showers the street in confetti.

A fitting end for an iconic show.
