After England’s victory over Germany in the Women’s Euro 2022 final on Sunday, Alex Scott was still quite rightly emotional when reflecting on the historic result during BBC Breakfast.
England overcame Germany with a 2-1 win after extra time, with goals from Ella Toone and Chloe Kelly to record a landmark moment for English football.
The former Arsenal and England defender, who made 140 appearances for the national side, was in an emotional and determined mood when chatting to hosts Sally Nugent and Ben Thompson, Scott, 37, on Monday morning.
‘Hearing the reaction – it got me emotional once again. You know, what the Lionesses have done – I’m [crying] again just thinking about it,’ she began, choking up.
She continued: ‘They’ve raised the bar, they’ve changed the way women’s football is viewed forever in this country. There’s no going back now.’
Scott, who finished as a runner-up with England at the 2009 Euros, has long been an advocate and champion for the women’s game.

She is one of the game’s most decorated players, having won a string of major trophies with Arsenal between 2005 and 2009, then again between 2012 and 2019.
Scott also used yesterday’s victory for England as a chance to remind those who dismissed the tournament that they missed out on something special.

‘Back in 2018, we were begging people to host the women’s Euros in their stadiums,’ she said. ‘So many people said “no”.’
She continued: ‘I hope you’re all looking at yourselves right now because you weren’t brave enough.’

Her comments were backed up by Arsenal legend Ian Wright, who said that the Euros win should be the starting point for improved funding in the women’s game at grass roots level.
The official attendance for yesterday’s final at Wembley was 87,192, which meant that the three largest attendances for football matches in 2022 all belong to the women’s game.
