If you’ve never heard of the PS5’s accolades feature, you’re not the only one and that’s precisely why Sony’s getting rid of it.

There were a lot of reasons to be excited for the PlayStation 5 in the run-up to its launch. Although we can’t imagine Sony’s new accolades feature was one of them.

It allows users to send badges to one another as a reward for good online play, with the idea being to encourage camaraderie and good behaviour.

Honestly, we didn’t even know this feature existed in the first place and, from the sound of it, nobody else did either, which is why Sony has decided to pull the plug on it.

It won’t go straight away, but Sony intends on removing it at some point this autumn. There also appear to be no plans to replace it, with Sony leaving it up to players to decide whether they want to spread positivity online.

‘The feature hasn’t seen the level of usage we anticipated, so we are refocusing our efforts,’ says Sony. ‘We encourage the community to continue to send positive messages to one another.’

Fittingly, Sony didn’t even bother putting out a tweet to announce its removal. All it did was update its list of discontinued PlayStation features and leave it to somebody else to discover and share the news.

Very few will mourn the loss of the feature, but there are those that are a bit disappointed with the news. That said, even they admit that it was woefully underused and poorly integrated.

I’ve had my ps5 since launch and maybe have 4 accolades to my name and am barely able to give any. The games I play don’t really support them or if they do, they’re pretty well hidden. The one game that has it pretty obvious is R6 Siege

PS5 accolades are leaving? ☹️ I thought they were cute and wholesome! 🥺 Too bad PlayStation didn’t use them often, I only got the notification on Sackboy.

PS5 accolades getting discontinued in my opinion is dumb because it was a nice idea that just wasn’t implemented all that well so of course hardly anybody used it. I used to give them out all the time and you can see how many I even received. pic.twitter.com/HNC6oT7t3C

The Accolades system on PS5 is being removed. Shame, they had potential. Idk why they couldn’t just make them available to give by going to someone’s profile instead of what it is now where you can only give them if the game developer has implemented them into the game itself.

There’s probably no one reason for why the accolades feature saw little use, but we can at least partially put it down to Sony simply not advertising it well.

Sony’s never brought the feature up in relation to announcements for new online multiplayer games and it’s not especially prominent on the PlayStation 5 dashboard either. You need to go into your profile to even learn about it.

This seems to be a recurring problem with Sony lately, as its revamped PlayStation Plus service was also poorly promoted. Particularly regarding its library of retro games.

We didn’t have a full list of which games would be available until the service launched. On top of that, it saw a staggered release (meaning we in the UK got it much later than everyone else) and some games wound up not being available in certain countries.

Sony also never explained that the PlayStation 1 games were the PAL releases that ran slower, something the company has promised to address in the future.
