The next Star Wars TV series, Andor, is set to premiere on Disney+ in September – and now an official trailer for it has finally arrived.

The series, which will see Diego Luna reprise his role as Cassian Andor, is a spin-off from Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, released in cinemas back in 2016.

Rogue One told the story of a group of rebels who stole the Death Star plans and gave them to Leia Skywalker before the events of the very first Star Wars film.

Andor, which is set five years before the events of Rogue One, will track the titular character in his days as a thief while the war between the Rebellion and the Galactic Empire begins.

The series is created by Tony Gilroy, who co-wrote the screenplay for the film that also starred Felicity Jones and Mads Mikkelsen as daughter and father.

We’ve taken a look at the brand new trailer for Andor to hunt for links to Rogue One, the Skywalker saga, and the other Star Wars TV series.

We’re going back to the Galactic Senate

‘To steal from the Empire, you just walk in like you belong. They’re so proud of themselves,’ Cassian says in a voiceover, while images of the Galactic Senate are shown. Fans will, of course, remember this iconic set from several of the Star Wars prequels most memorable scenes.

We also get a cheeky cameo from Game of Thrones’ Anton Lesser, who was known for playing Cersei Lannister’s creepy butler-slash-doctor-slash-secretary, Maester Qyburn.

Gritty Star Wars’ shows are here to stay

What follows are a sequence of images covered in mud, oil, and the grinding of metal, which confirms that the series will carry on the tradition that Rogue One arguably started – spending time with the gritty underbelly of the Star Wars universe, at those who suffer the effects of the Empire’s tyranny but have received very little screen time until very recent years.

As a parade of Storm Troopers walks by the camera, Stellan Skarsgard’s Luthen gives the trailer its second voiceover: ‘Cassian Andor, the Empire is choking your soul slowly. We’re starting now to notice. All I’m asking is this: Wouldn’t you rather give it all to something real?’

Forest Whitaker is back

Star Wars fans thought they’d seen the last of Forest Whitaker’s Saw Gerrera when he was wiped out by the Empire on desert planet Jedha – the Empire were testing a new planet-destroying weapon and Gerrera decided he was done running away from danger.

We see him reprise his role as he stands opposite Stellan Skarsgard – the trailer follows Skarsgard’s Luthen for quite a while. ‘I need all the heroes I can get,’ Luthen says to Gerrera. ‘For the greater good,’ Gerrera responds.

‘Call it what you will,’ Luthen teases, before Gerrera is open and honest about where this story is heading: ‘Let’s call it… war’.

It’s not all going to be grit and gloom

You didn’t think they were going to deprive us of TIE fighters, did you? (Picture: Disney/Lucasfilm)

This is Star Wars. It wouldn’t Star Wars without some laser-firing, spaceship racing, big spectacle action. After showing us the grimy streets that belong to Andor, we transition to the pie-in-the-sky, impossibly skyscraping cities, with decorated penthouses and glamorous halls reminiscent of all those council scenes in the prequel trilogy.

We see Luthen again – this time, instead of donning a dark hood to crawl the streets and meet with the first sparks of the Rebellion, he greets people with smiles in rooms several hundred feet in the sky, before piloting a spacecraft and heading into battle: ‘I’m not slipping, I’ve just been hiding for too long.’

The visual effects department have been hard at work

It wouldn’t be Star Wars without heavy use of impressive CGI, and Andor doesn’t look like it’s going to disappoint in that regard. The trailer closes with a montage of shots that look like they were very, very expensive to put together.

One shot in particular features (presumably) Cassian flying towards an unknown location that looks mightily beautiful. The next shot sees him on the run in his ship from pursuing TIE fighters, so we can presume that we might have to take a moment to bask in the beauty before returning to a tense combat sequence.

Watch Andor on Disney+ from September 21.
