This year’s Evo fighting game tournament will feature new content and announcements from Arc System Works and SNK but not NetherRealm.
There are a lot of developers that seem overdue for an announcement at the moment, since they’ve not released a new game for several years and haven’t revealed what they’re currently working on. Prime amongst these is NetherRealm, whose last game was Mortal Kombat 11 in 2019.
Previously they’ve alternated between new Mortal Kombat and Injustice games but all rumours at the moment point towards Mortal Kombat 12 as their next project, although you won’t find out if that’s true at this year’s Evo event.
The yearly fighting game tournament, the biggest in the world, has teased announcements from Warner Bros., Capcom, Bandai Namco, SNK, and Arc System Works, but NetherRealm will not be present.
Since NetherRealm are owned by Warner Bros., fans initially though that this was a hint that Mortal Kombat 12 would be revealed, but series creator Ed Boon has claimed that’s not true. So, it’s almost certainly MultiVersus that Warner will be there for.
Evo is now owned by Sony, although that shouldn’t make any practical difference to how it works. In the past, at least, Evo has not tended to be used for major new game announcements, but instead DLC and other more minor additions to existing games.
So when Sony says that the aforementioned companies will be in attendance it’s almost certainly for games that have already been announced.
Evo 22 fighting game line-up
Guilty Gear -Strive-
Mortal Kombat 11 Ultimate
Tekken 7
The King Of Fighters 15
Melty Blood: Type Lumina
Dragon Ball FighterZ
Granblue Fantasy: Versus
Skullgirls: 2nd Encore
There’s always the chance of a big surprise but Capcom is probably there for Street Fighter 6 and almost certainly a new character reveal (even if they’ve all been leaked already).
Bandai Namco is less certain though as Tekken 7 is getting on a bit now, although it is still in competition at Evo itself – as is Dragon Ball FighterZ.
SNK has The King Of Fighters 15, while Arc System Works is behind three games at Evo: Guilty Gear Strive, Granblue Fantasy: Versus, and Dragon Ball FighterZ.
That doesn’t mean that the announcements they each have planned are related to those specific games, but that is the most likely eventuality.
Evo 2022 will take place in Las Vegas from August 5 to 7, i.e. this weekend, so there’s not long to find out exactly what’s going on.
Sony will be running a separate live show event at the same time, which is where the announcements are likely to be made. PlayStation Tournaments: Evo Lounge will be streamed on YouTube and Twitch or you can just check back with us on Monday and we’ll summarise it all for you.
