It could be game over for Sarah Paulson and American Horror Story.
Created by Ryan Murphy and Brad Fulchuk, the horror anthology series centres on different spooky characters and locations, ranging from a witch coven to a possessed farmhouse.
The 47-year-old joined the phenomenon more than a decade ago and has worn many masks, playing a psychic, a journalist, a witch, a two-headed twin and a junkie ghost.
But the Ocean’s Eight star implied she might be moving on to pastures new, citing several reasons including her ‘nervous system’ being no longer able to cope with the terrifying scenes.
‘It’s not that I’m not open to it. I’m always open to it, but I feel like I’ve been doing it for a long time, and people might start getting sick of me in that world,’ she told Variety.
‘Let someone else scream and run and cry for a second. Other people can do that too!
‘Also, my nervous system. There was a time when I was younger when I was like, “I can do this all night. I love it!” Now I’m like, “Momma’s tired!”’

And it’s not only American Horror Story that Sarah is thinking about leaving – her tenure at American Crime Story could also be over.
The Ratched actress starred in two seasons of the true crime drama, also made by Ryan, 56, one focussing on the OJ Simpson murder case, while the other documented the scandal of Bill Clinton and Monica Lewinksy.
Explaining she had taken a ‘wild’ year out of acting, Sarah added: ‘Believe me, don’t think I don’t know what a privileged place it is to sit in and know that I can take a year off and still be able to live my life and not in a fearful way and that is a real really lucky thing.

‘I’ve said no to some things, which is a wildly new thing. I think the shows are always extraordinarily well-crafted and things I’ve always been so proud to be part of.
‘So, never say never, but I’m sort of in this new space of seeing what comes and not pre-planning, which is very unlike me! I’m not saying I’m comfortable there yet, but I’m experimenting.’
For civil servant Linda Tripp in American Crime Story: Impeachment, Sarah wore a ‘fat suit’ which attracted wide-spread criticism.
Addressing the backlash, the star told the Los Angeles Times the ‘controversy is a legitimate one.’

She added: ‘I think fat phobia is real. I think to pretend otherwise causes further harm. And it is a very important conversation to be had. But that entire responsibility I don’t think falls on the actor for choosing to do something that is arguably, and I’m talking about from the inside out, the challenge of a lifetime.’
Next on the horizon for Sarah is a project where she is the ‘old lady on set.’
She added: ’What I’m looking for is new. I’m looking for new experiences and looking to collaborate in new ways with young filmmakers. I’m interested in this idea of being the old lady on the set.’
Fans will next see the 12 Years a Slave actress on their screens in horror film Dust, which follows a woman who is trapped by dust storms.
All seasons of American Horror Story and seasons one and two of American Crime story are available to stream on Disney Plus in the UK.
