Five years since last being on our screens, fans have been overjoyed to hear that Big Brother is officially returning in 2023.

The beloved reality show gave us the likes of Alison Hammond and Adele Roberts, and even let viewers into sides of Gemma Collins and Rylan Clark that hadn’t been seen before, thanks to the Celebrity spin-off version.

Now, a new cast of housemates from across the country and all walks of life will be homed in a brand new Big Brother house, with the eyes of the nation on them across the six weeks.

Big Brother aired for the final time in November 2018 after Channel 5 announced that the 19th series would be the last.

The final series saw Cameron Cole became the youngest housemate ever to win in an emotional goodbye after 18 years on air.

Big Brother initially ran from 2000 to 2010 on Channel 4, and saw presenters Davina McCall and Rylan before its move to Channel 5 until 2018 where it was presented by series two champion Brian and later Emma Willis before being axed.

Who were the original Big Brother presenters?

Davina presented Big Brother from its first series in 2000 until 2010, after which Brian Dowling took over from 2011 to 2012.

After its move to Channel 5, Emma fronted the reality series from 2013 to 2018.

Meanwhile Big Brother’s spin off show, Big Brother’s Little Brother, was presented by Dermot O’Leary from 2001 to 2008, and Natalie Casey in 2001.

George Lamb took the reigns from 2008 to 2010, with Zezi Ifore co-presenting in 2008, before George was joined by Emma for the final series.

Why did Big Brother end?

At the time, Channel 5 confirmed they were dropping Big Brother after months of speculation, in a statement which read: ‘The forthcoming series of Big Brother will be the last – of either celebrity or civilian versions – on Channel 5.

‘We’d like to thank Endemol and all of the production team who have worked tirelessly to make the show a success.

‘We’d also like to thank our brilliant presenters – Emma on Big Brother and Rylan from Bit on the Side – for their consummate professionalism, Marcus, the voice of Big Brother and all of the housemates who have created so many memorable moments.

‘Most importantly, we’d like to thank fans of the show for their support over the last seven years. ‘We look forward to giving the final series a brilliant send-off.’

Before Channel 5 released their statement, production company Endemol Shine said it was ‘disappointed not to reach an agreement with Channel 5.’

They said at the time: ‘We are incredibly proud of Big Brother which has consistently been the highest rated show for Channel 5 over the past seven years, with the latest series of Celebrity Big Brother being the channel’s highest rating show of the year, growing its audience year on year by 17% and tripling to the channel’s slot average for 16-24s.’

The added: ‘Whilst disappointed not to reach an agreement with Channel 5 the decision opens up a new chapter and we are excited about future possibilities for Big Brother in the UK.’

When Cameron was crowned, Emma couldn’t hold back her tears as she presented the final ever Big Brother, saying: ‘It brought real people from all walks of life into our homes every single night and created a whole new genre of TV that changed popular culture forever,’ she wobbled.

‘1,352 days. That’s 3.7 years of television and 327 housemates. Tonight we will crown the 19th and quite possibly last champion.’

Little did Emma know that five years later, a new future champion would be heading into the Big Brother house.

When could Big Brother be back?

So far, all we know for sure is that Big Brother is returning to ITV2 in 2023.

When the show originally ran on Channel 4, it would normally air in May.

Once it moved to Channel 5, from 2011 to 2018, Big Brother usually aired a little later, in June.

But, some series actually aired earlier in May or September with Celebrity Big Brother taking place in the middle.

With Love Island airing on ITV2 twice next year too, it’s possible Big Brother will fall in the middle.

How long does Big Brother usually run?

The announcement of the new 2023 series says the Big Brother contestants will be under watch for six weeks, which is shorter than past seasons.

Although, past series’ varied from anything like 8 weeks to nearly 13 weeks.

Series 7 in 2006 was the first which ran for more than 90 days, with more than 20 housemates.

Meanwhile, the final series in 2018 lasted only 53 days, running from September and November.

According to the revival show’s release: ‘The action will all play out under the roof of the iconic Big Brother house, which will be given its own contemporary new look ready for this reimagining of the show.
