The Sandman might just be hitting Netflix this week, but author Neil Gaiman already has a plan for how season 2 will go, teasing that it’s ‘all written and all ready’.
The series, starring Tom Sturridge as Morpheus and Gwendoline Christie as Lucifer, follows the comic books, which ran from 1989 to 1996 with a story over 3000 pages long, so understandably not everything could fit into one season.
Asked what he’s most excited to show in future seasons of the show, Neil told Metro.co.uk at The Sandman premiere: ‘Right now, what I most want to see is the Lucifer and Morpheus rematch that would begin season two.
‘Gwendoline as Lucifer is such a glorious, towering figure over the production and everybody wants to see her going up against Tom again. It’s all written and it’s all ready so that’s what I want to see.’
The comics also feature trans and non-binary characters who mean a huge amount to fans, with the genderfluidity of various characters, most prominently Mason Alexander Park’s Desire, being reflected in the show.
Neil also confirmed that, if season two gets the green light, iconic character Wanda, who is a trans woman with an incredibly powerful storyline in the comics, will make an appearance.
‘Absolutely, and we made sure that we had, for the season two writers room, that we had trans and we had NB [non-binary] people in the writers room working on it because that seemed to us to be the only way to do it,’ he added.
‘So The Sandman, we’ll get Wanda, we’ll get all of that stuff – as long as enough people watch season one and they let us keep going.’

The highly-anticipated series, which comes after the success of Prime Video’s Good Omens adaptation, features a star-studded cast including Tom and Gwendoline alongside Jenna Coleman (Johanna Constantine), Charles Dance (Roderick Burgess), David Thewlis (John Dee), and Stephen Fry (Gilbert).
Neil previously teased that the show has a long future ahead.
Speaking on Sky News, he explained: ‘At the end of the day, Sandman is a story about stories. And it’s a giant meta-story in which other stories occur, but that also allows us to do some fabulous things.

‘For example, in the whole of season one of Sandman, there aren’t really two episodes that are like each other – we get to do things that are horror, and we get to do beautiful historic episodes, we get to do stuff that takes through all sorts of different genre and story.’
When asked if there was going to be a series two or three, as Neil had already addressed the programme as ‘series one,’ he replied: ‘What’s lovely about Sandman, is we’ve taken the first two volumes basically, the first two books.
‘Preludes & Nocturnes and The Doll’s House are the first ten episodes.
‘So it absolutely can keep going, we’ve got a lot more story… There were 3000 pages of Sandman altogether, and we have told the first 400 pages. So we have a way to go.’
The Sandman hits Netflix on Friday, August 5.
