Author and former doctor Adam Kay has paid a touching tribute to This Is Going To Hurt character Shruti Acharya (Ambika Mod) after being inundated by fans.

The BBC drama, adapted from the 42-year-old’s book of the same name, follows the horrors and highs of Adam’s (Ben Whishaw) life as a junior doctor.

In the six-part series, Adam, who uses dark humour as a coping mechanism when he’s faced with the depths of human suffering on the ward, works alongside passionate student doctor Shruti.

But after a build-up of stress from relentless shifts and a lack of support, things get too much for Shruti, who dies by suicide towards the end of the series.

In an emotional scene following the death, Adam and hospital staff, who are not given the time to grieve, plant a tree in her memory.

On Twitter, real Adam revealed he had been approached by fans looking to pay their respects by the shrub at Ealing Hospital, where filming took place, only to find it didn’t exist.

He said: ‘Lots of people tweeted me afterwards saying they’d been to Ealing and looked for the tree, then felt silly when they realised it didn’t exist.

Here’s a nice thing. The TV version of This Is Going To Hurt is all about the mental health of doctors, and culminates with the death by suicide of a junior doctor called Shruti (spoiler alert). There is a scene where a tree is planted in her memory, shot at Ealing Hospital. 1/3

‘I didn’t think it was silly – I thought there should be a memorial to healthcare professionals who have taken their own lives.

‘Today, with huge thanks to Ealing Hospital, we planted a tree – the UK’s only memorial to NHS staff who have died by suicide.

‘May they rest in peace, and may we redouble our efforts to stop it happening ever in the future.’

Fans were quick to praise Adam for helping to raise awareness of mental health in medicine, with one writing simply: ‘Thank you.’

Another penned: ‘Beautiful, caused leaky eyes having worked with colleagues who have died by suicide, we definitely need to care more for each other.’

‘I found Shruti’s death, and the manner it was presented, and the effect upon the people in her life who she left behind profoundly moving,’ a third said.

A fourth follower added: ‘This is beautiful, thank you Adam!’

A second season of This Is Going To Hurt has not yet been given the greenlight, but Ambika previously told RadioTimes.com that she’s ‘heard people talk about a second series’.

‘I don’t know if that’s confirmed or anything. But I can definitely see a potential for it. But I have not heard I’ve not known no one said anything to me about it,’ she said.

This Is Going To Hurt is available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
