Ashton Kutcher has opened up about a health battle that left him unable to hear, see, or walk.

The American star, 44, is famously private and closed-off when it comes to his personal life, however, he got candid about a diagnosis he received of a rare form of vasculitis.

Ashton – who is married to Family Guy star Mila Kunis – described how he was diagnosed with the disease nearly two years ago, but it took him a year to recover.

He now feels ‘lucky to be alive’ after the autoimmune disorder caused pretty severe symptoms.

Speaking on an upcoming episode of Running Wild with Bear Grylls, the dad-of-two said: ‘Like two years ago, I had this weird, super rare form of vasculitis, that like knocked out my vision, it knocked out my hearing, it knocked out like all my equilibrium’.

In the clip shared by Access Hollywood, the Two and a Half Men star continued: ‘It took me like a year to build it all back up again. You don’t really appreciate it until it’s gone, until you go, “I don’t know if I’m ever going to be able to see again; I don’t know if I’m ever going to be able to hear again; I don’t know if I’m ever going to be able to walk again”.’

Ashton did not disclose specifics of his diagnosis but, as stated by the NHS, vasculitis involves the inflammation of the blood vessels, with the immune system attacking healthy blood vessels and causing them to become swollen and narrow.

Talking about his journey following the diagnosis, he added: ‘The minute you start seeing your obstacles as things that are made for you to give you what you need, then life starts to get fun.’

‘You start surfing on top of your problems instead of living underneath them’, he shared.

TV star Bear praised Ashton for maintaining a positive outlook and for showing ‘strength through adversity’ during his recovery.

Ashton – who shares daughter Wyatt, seven, and son Dimitri, five, with Mila – keeps himself to himself most of the time these days, but earlier this year it was announced that he would be returning for a Netflix sequel of That ’70s Show.

His Black Swan actress wife will also make a grand comeback in That ’90s Show, which will a spin-off of the iconic series.

The original programme followed the lives of teenage friends in a fictional town in Wisconsin and ran from 1998 to 2006.

Its cast included Ashton and Mila, who were catapulted to fame following the show’s success.
