Serena Williams has revealed her desire to expand her family with husband Alexis Ohanian, after announcing her intention to retire from tennis.

The Grand Slam champion and all-around sporting icon, 40, welcomed her first child with the Reddit founder, 39, in 2017.

She endured a tough ordeal in the delivery room at the time, and nearly lost her life after giving birth to daughter Alexis Olympia Ohanian Jr.

In an open letter for Vogue US, the athlete spoke of wanting to have more children with the tech mogul, but explained that she doesn’t want to become pregnant again while working as an athlete – after famously winning the Australian Open while expecting her first child.

‘In the last year, Alexis and I have been trying to have another child, and we recently got some information from my doctor that put my mind at ease and made me feel that whenever we’re ready, we can add to our family,’ she wrote.

Penning the message alongside a stunning joint cover with the youngster, she revealed that the four-year-old has asked to be a big sister – but only to a girl.

Serena admitted that it’s unfair to have to choose between her sporting career and her family life, but realized that ‘something’s got to give’.

‘If I were a guy, I wouldn’t be writing this because I’d be out there playing and winning while my wife was doing the physical labor of expanding our family,’ she said. ‘Don’t get me wrong: I love being a woman, and I loved every second of being pregnant with Olympia.’

Serena noted that, while she has ‘a lot of support’ around her, she is an ‘incredibly hands-on mother’, and that she has only spent one 24-hour period away from Alexis since giving birth almost five years ago.

Comparing this to tennis, she confessed that the sport has ‘always felt like a sacrifice’, but one that she ‘enjoyed making’.

Away from her incredible career on the court, Serena has quietly started Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm which has already seen huge success over the last few years.

Speaking about her working life, she suggested that the balance in her life has slowly started tipping to her company.

‘Maybe the best word to describe what I’m up to is evolution. I’m here to tell you that I’m evolving away from tennis, toward other things that are important to me. A few years ago I quietly started Serena Ventures, a venture capital firm. Soon after that, I started a family. I want to grow that family,’ she added.

‘These days, if I have to choose between building my tennis résumé and building my family, I choose the latter.’
