The game that originally inspired Resident Evil is looking to make a comeback, as evidence of an abandoned remake also emerges.
Resident Evil did not invent survival horror. It invented the phrase ‘survival horror’, but the gameplay and visual style was copied wholesale from French game Alone In the Dark, which came out four years earlier.
The game was well-known at the time but the original, and best, entry was only on PC and while the sequel also came to PlayStation and Saturn it didn’t do so until after Resident Evil. As a result, it was never a big hit with console gamers and the final entry in the original trilogy went back to being PC-only.
There have been a few attempts to bring it back since, but none were ever a success, and yet rumours suggest that a new title is due to be announced this Friday.
The rumours began with a typically cryptic hint from irritating, but very reliable, rumourmonger The Snitch, who teased something to do with the series earlier in the week.
His tweet is actually a quote from the 2005 movie adaptation, by the infamous Uwe Boll, which is widely regarded as one of the worst films ever made.
No further details were offered, but since THQ Nordic currently owns the rights to the franchise and they have a preview showcase planned for Friday, August 12 it’s not hard to put two and two together.
Assuming something is announced on Friday, it’s not clear whether it’s a reboot or a remake. However, coincidentally, evidence has emerged that a remake was already underway at one point several years ago.
Exactly when it was intended to come out is unclear but a teaser for the remake indicates it would’ve been released for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, so sometime in the mid to late 2000s.
The graphics look very old fashioned now, as you’d expect from an unfinished game from over a decade ago, but unlike the 2002 remake of Resident Evil the game does not feature pre-rendered backdrops and so its camera can move about, as well as replicate the fixed camera angles of the original.
The original Alone In The Dark was much less of an action game than Resident Evil and heavily influenced by the work of H. P. Lovecraft, so what direction a new title would take is hard to say.
