Strictly Come Dancing’s 20th series is due to kick off in September, meaning another celebrity will soon be the proud owner of the famous glitterball.

A host of famous faces are taking part in this year’s contest, including Will Mellor, Kym Marsh, Ellie Simmonds and Bros singer Matt Goss.

Who will win will be decided after three gruelling months that will see the dancers training day in, day out with their pro partners.

And while we’ve still got a little time to wait before the new series kicks off, here we take a look at the past winners of Strictly Come Dancing…

Series 1 – Natasha Kaplinsky & Brendan Cole

Brendan and Natasha were the first ever winners of the Glitterball trophy when Strictly kicked off, with a series which ran through the spring and summer from 15 May to 3 July 2004.

Second place: Christopher Parker & Hanna Karttunen

Third place: Lesley Garrett & Anton du Beke

Series 2 – Jill Halfpenny & Darren Bennett

Former EastEnders actress Jill took the title after her jive with Darren Bennett won ‘best ever’ plaudits. The series ran from 23 October to 11 December 2004.

Second place: Denise Lewis & Ian Waite

Third place: Julian Clary & Erin Boag

Series 3 – Darren Gough & Lilia Kopylova

Darren and Lilia took the Glitterball as the series moved into its more familiar autumn/winter slot, running from 15 October to 17 December 2005.

Second place: Colin Jackson & Erin Boag

Third place: Zoë Ball & Ian Waite

Series 4 – Mark Ramprakash & Karen Hardy

Former cricketer Mark Ramprakash danced his way to victory with Karen Hardy in a series which ran from 7 October to 23 December 2006.

Second place: Matt Dawson & Lilia Kopylova

Third place: Emma Bunton & Darren Bennett

Series 5 – Alesha Dixon & Matthew Cutler

Alesha Dixon nabbed the title and subsequently bagged a place on the judging panel. This series ran from 6 October to 22 December 2007.

Second place: Matt Di Angelo & Flavia Cacace

Third place: Gethin Jones & Camilla Dallerup

Series 6 – Tom Chambers & Camilla Dallerup

Holby City and Casualty star Tom Chambers was the 2008 champion, in a series which ran from 20 September to 20 December 2008.

Second place: Rachel Stevens & Vincent Simone

Third place: Lisa Snowdon & Brendan Cole

Series 7 – Chris Hollins & Ola Jordan

TV presenter Chris Hollins went all the way to the trophy with pro dancer Ola Jordan – and a memorable Charleston – in a series that ran from 18 September to 19 December 2009.

Second place: Ricky Whittle & Natalie Lowe

Third place: Ali Bastian & Brian Fortuna

Series 8 – Kara Tointon & Artem Chigvintsev

Kara and Artem fought off competition from TV host Matt Baker to take the title in the series that ran from 1 October to 18 December 2010.

Second place: Matt Baker & Aliona Vilani

Third place: Pamela Stephenson & James Jordan

Series 9 – Harry Judd & Aliona Vilani

McFly’s Harry Judd scored a stunning victory in the series which ran from 30 September to 17 December 2011.

Second place: Chelsee Healey & Pasha Kovalev

Third place: Jason Donovan & Kristina Rihanoff

Series 10 – Louis Smith & Flavia Cacace

Olympic medallist Louis Smith showed some nifty footwork on Strictly also, winning the series which ran from 5 October 2012 22 December 2012.

Joint second place: Denise Van Outen & James Jordan and Kimberley Walsh & Pasha Kovalev

Series 11 – Abbey Clancy & Aljaž Škorjanec

Abbey and Aljaz were the worthy winners in the series which ran from 27 September to 21 December 2013.

Joint second place: Natalie Gumede & Artem Chigvintsev and Susanna Reid & Kevin Clifton

Series 12 – Caroline Flack & Pasha Kovalev

Caroline Flack and Pasha Kovalev triumphed with some beautiful routines in the series which ran from 26 September to 20 December 2014.

Joint second place: Frankie Bridge & Kevin Clifton and Simon Webbe & Kristina Rihanoff

Series 13 – Jay McGuiness & Aliona Vilani

The Wanted’s Jay McGuiness gave us an iconic jive and went on to win the series which ran from 25 September to 19 December 2015.

Joint second place: Georgia May Foote & Giovanni Pernice and Kellie Bright & Kevin Clifton

Series 14 – Ore Oduba & Joanne Clifton

Another classic jive came from Ore Oduba, who went on to take the title in the series which ran from 23 September to 17 December 2016.

Joint second place: Danny Mac & Oti Mabuse and Louise Redknapp & Kevin Clifton.

Series 15 – Joe McFadden & Katya Jones

Actor Joe McFadden scored an impressive victory in the series which ran from 23 September to 16 December 2017.

Joint second place: Alexandra Burke & Gorka Márquez and Debbie McGee & Giovanni Pernice and Gemma Atkinson & Aljaž Škorjanec.

Series 16 – Stacey Dooley and Kevin Clifton

Stacey Dooley swapped documentaries for the dancefloor and took the trophy home in the series which ran from 22 September – 15 December 2018.

Joint second place: Ashley Roberts & Pasha Kovalev and Joe Sugg and Dianne Buswell and Faye Tozer & Giovanni Pernice.

Series 17 – Kelvin Fletcher and Oti Mabuse

Emmerdale actor Kelvin Fletcher came in as a late arrival, replacing Jamie Laing when he had to drop out due to injury – and went on to win the whole series, which ran from 24 September – 14 December 2019.

Joint second place: Karim Zeroual & Amy Dowden and Emma Barton & Anton du Beke.

Series 18 – Bill Bailey and Oti Mabuse

The 2020 series of the show was shorter than usual due to the pandemic – but comedian Bill Bailey went on to take top honours, giving Oti Mabuse her second win in a row. The series ran from 24 October – 19 December 2020.

Joint second place: Maisie Smith & Gorka Marquez and HRVY & Janette Manrara and Jamie Laing & Karen Hauer.

Series 19 – Rose Ayling-Ellis and Giovanni Pernice

With things returning to something more normal in 2021, EastEnders actress Rose Ayling-Ellis took the trophy – with her interlude of silence during her Couple’s Choice routine with Giovanni Pernice winning prizes of its own. The series ran from 25 September – 18 December 2021.

Second place: John Whaite and Johannese Radebe. AJ Odudu and Kai Widdrington also reached the final but AJ withdrew due to injury.

Strictly Come Dancing returns to BBC One in September.
