It’s been less than a week since The Sandman arrived on Netflix, and viewers have become utterly enraptured by the magical tale based on the DC comic book series by Neil Gaiman.

However, some have found themselves distracted by the aspect ratio of the series, questioning if it has something to do with their own screens, rather than just being the way that the show looks.

Starring Tom Sturridge, Gwendoline Christie and Jenna Coleman in the talented cast, The Sandman follows Morpheus, the king of dreams, as he sets out on a quest to bring order back to his realm, which is known as The Dreaming.

Other members of the cast include Boyd Holbrook as The Corinthian, Kirby Howell-Baptiste as Death and David Thewlis as John Dee, whose efforts to find ‘truth’ ends up causing chaos.

One viewer questioning the aspect ratio tweeted: ‘#TheSandman is fabulous so far but why does everything look so stretched upwards? Is it supposed to be dreamy and I’m just an uncultured swine or is there something wrong with my #aspect ratio?’

‘Does #TheSandman switch to a normal aspect ratio at any point, or are all episodes like this?’ someone else asked, while another wrote: ‘When I started #TheSandman I checked my aspect ratio and then came to twitter to check if everyone else was talking about it. Cause it really is an inconvenience until you get used to it.’

I already have astigmatism so whatever is going on with #TheSandman ‘s aspect ratio isn’t helping. I get it. It’s dreams. It’s surreal. But it’s giving me a headache.

This aspect ratio is slightly doing my head in though… so subtle it’s like it’s gaslighting me 😂 #TheSandman

Very much enjoying #TheSandman, and four episodes in I think my brain has got used to the weird aspect ratio thing. Can we have Neverwhere next please? My favourite.

Good day to everyone except the ones complaining about the aspect ratio of #TheSandman .

So what is the unusual aspect ratio all about?

Why does the aspect ratio on The Sandman appear skewed?

If you thought the aspect ratio on your screen appeared distorted while you were watching The Sandman… there is a reason for it.

It turns out it was a completely intentional creative choice, given the dreamlike state of the world depicted on the series, Variety claimed.

People watching the show have noticed that characters’ faces and the ethereal backdrops look longer than one might expect them to be at first glance.

However, according to the publication, this is done on purpose to feed into the ‘surreal feeling’ of the story.

Metro.co.uk has contacted Netflix for comment.

The Sandman is available to watch on Netflix.
