Laura Whitmore has landed her first West End role but Love Island fans are calling for Ekin-Su Cülcüloğlu to get the part.
The host of the ITV2 dating show will be treading the boards as Jennie in stage thriller 2:22 – A Ghost Story alongside the likes of Matt Willis, Felix Scott and Tamsin Carroll in the hit production’s newest cast from September 6 to January 8.
While the casting has caught some people by surprise, Love Island viewers have pitched a different familiar face from the villa to step into the role.
After the news was revealed with a poster of Laura, a fan shared a mocked-up version suggesting the show’s recent winner Ekin-Su would be a perfect fit for the part.
‘Fixed it,’ they quipped, with plenty of fans retweeting the hilarious Photoshop job, while others took to the comments to make similar suggestions.
‘Ekin-Su must have been busy,’ joked a different Twitter user, while another tweeted: ‘Can’t wait for Ekin-Su as Jenny.’
In the play, Jenny believes her new home is haunted, while her husband Sam is not having any of it, leading to the couple arguing with their first dinner guests – old friend Lauren and her new partner Ben – as belief and scepticism clash.
In a statement, Laura said: ‘I’m so excited to be making my West End debut playing Jenny in the next production of 2:22. Theatre has always been my first love and I can’t wait to get back on stage.
‘I am a huge fan of the previous productions and delighted to be getting stuck in with rehearsals and working alongside such a hugely talented cast and team.’
The play will stay at the Criterion Theatre for the fourth stint after it moved for the previous run after seasons at the Noel Coward and Gielgud theatres.
Meanwhile, Ekin-Su is still keeping busy after winning Love Island earlier this month, with reports claiming she has signed the biggest clothing deal in the show’s history with online retailer Oh Polly.
Love Island is available to stream in full on ITV Hub.
