Strictly Come Dancing stars were given dog codenames in a bid to keep their identity a secret.

The celebrities on the upcoming series of the long-running BBC show were all given canine-inspired aliases so their identities wouldn’t be leaked.

EastEnders star James Bye was christened Great Dane, as he stands at over six-foot tall, while the former X Factor star Fleur East was given the nickname Husky due to her trademark singing voice, as reported by the Daily Star.

Kym Marsh – who starred on the ITV soap Coronation Street – was known as Dalmatian, due to her favourite Disney flick being 101 Dalmatians, while Tony Adams was called Greyhound because of his spindly frame.

Loose Women panellist Kaye Adams’ was given the codename Scottish Terror, which was a nod to her homeland, while Bros singer Matt Goss was called American Bulldog due to the time he’s spent in the US over recent years.

Elsewhere, Paralympic champion Ellie Simmonds was called a Golden Retriever, as they both share a playful and friendly personality, and DJ Tyler West was given the name Westie.

Meanwhile, Helen Skelton – who has been announced as the final contestant in this year’s lineup – recently revealed that she only agreed to appear on the BBC show ‘the other day’.

The 39-year-old presenter – who was known as Beagle – said: ‘I did the Christmas one the other year. The hair is the best, the make-up is incredible, the costumes are incredible. Who gets to go to work and be made to look a bit like Beyonce and have a fun time?

‘I thought this is madness not to do it, of course I should do it, it will be so much fun.’

And the presenter’s Summer On The Farm colleague Martin Hughes-Games has joked that her language could spark trouble for the Beeb.

‘Helen’s a bit dodgy to work with,’ Martin teased in a chat with The Sun. ‘She’s a safe pair of hands but has to be reined in a bit because she has a tendency to be a bit wild.’

He added: ‘We have someone from Channel 5 compliance, on set in South Yorkshire, who tells her that she mustn’t say too many naughty things. Although of course there’s always the chance that she might.’

Strictly Come Dancing returns next month to BBC One.
