A first look at a new ‘ensemble’ Marvel game will take place at the D23 expo in September, as well as news on the future of Lego Star Wars.

In our review of Spider-Man for the PC we lamented the fact that despite the success of the MCU there are still precious few big budget console superhero games. That is slowly changing though and there are currently four AAA titles on their way, with two more rumoured from EA.

Spider-Man 2 and Wolverine from Insomniac are still a way off but while it keeps getting delayed Midnight Suns will hopefully be out early next year. The fourth game though is a mystery and the only thing we know officially is that it features an ensemble cast and is by Amy Hennig.

Hennig is best known as the creator of Uncharted (and Soul Reaver) and after getting messed around by EA, while working on an unreleased Star Wars game, now has her own studio at Skydance Media, and is set to reveal her Marvel game at the D23 event on September 9.

The reveal is described as a ‘sneak peek’ so it’s probably not going to be much more than a teaser trailer, but at the moment the only thing we know for sure about the game is that it’s a ‘narrative driven, blockbuster action adventure’.

That’s about as vague a description as you could get but while most of Hennig’s games have been third person actioners she’s never done an ensemble game before, and it’s unclear whether that means multiplayer elements or not.

There’s a bazillion different superhero teams in the Marvel universe but the assumption that it’s the Fantastic Four is based on comments made during a Kevin Smith podcast, where it was revealed that co-host Mark Bernardin has been working on the game.

Although the two refused to say what the game was, Smith indicated that someone had guessed in the chat. Most of the guesses were for characters that have subsequently had games announced from other studios and the only one that’s both an ensemble and isn’t in development already is Fantastic Four.

Official descriptions also talk about multiple ‘heroes’ and reference the ‘pulp’ origins of Marvel, with the original Fantastic Four comic from 1961 being the beginning of the modern era of the Marvel universe.

The only other information so far is the implication from Hennig that this is not set in the MCU and is instead an original take on the property, but that’s exactly as you’d expect given how Spider-Man, Avengers, and Guardians Of The Galaxy has been handled.

The D23 event will also feature Midnight Suns and the Animal Crossing-esque Disney Dreamlight Valley. The only Star Wars game that’s confirmed to be there though is Lego Star Wars: The Skywalker Saga, which is odd as it was previously said that there’d be no more DLC – so perhaps the huge success of the game has caused someone to change their mind.

The fact that no other Star Wars games are confirmed for D23 is odd though, as not only do we know virtually nothing about Fallen Order sequel Star Wars Jedi: Survivor, which is due out next year, but there’s a host of other games that have been announced but never shown.

This includes a new game by Hennig, who rumours suggest is heading a revival of her abandoned ‘Project Ragtag’ game from EA. Whether it’s exactly the same game or just a similar concept (i.e. Uncharted in space) isn’t clear but the only official description is that it’s a ‘richly cinematic action adventure game.’
