Darren Day has opened up on how his dear friend Robbie Williams saved his life at the height of his addiction.
The West End star, who secretly battled a crack cocaine addiction during lockdown in May 2020, revealed the Let Me Entertain You singer paid for his rehab stint in South Africa and has been a shoulder to lean on ever since.
Speaking to Christine Lampard on Wednesday’s Lorraine, Darren said: ‘Without Rob, I would not be here. I mean not on the planet. I was just spiraling down and down, and it was very dark.’
When the Covid crisis hit, Darren, who has battled substance abuse in the past, was confronted with his demons again when he hadn’t earned an income between February and May 2020.
He was also just four days away from starting rehearsals from Footloose when the theatres closed, robbing him of another source of income.
Thankfully, Darren reached out to Take That star Robbie, who helped his friend through his relapse.

Sharing details of his breakdown, he continued: ‘I burst into tears on the motorway. I was drinking very heavily at the time, and other stuff, and I phoned Rob and I literally just broke down and cried like a little boy.’
While Darren admits that his friendship with Robbie is very private, he divulged that Robbie was quick to book him into a treatment facility.

‘He sent me to a rehab in South Africa for two months. I was wrongly diagnosed for 14 years and put on the wrong meds. In 2020 I was diagnosed with BPD (borderline personality disorder).’
Darren shared that he is now in a much better place, and thanks to Robbie he has a new team behind him and is on the right medication.
‘I haven’t felt like this in 25 years,’ he said. ‘I owe my life to Rob. We FaceTime three or four days a week. I love him dearly. Without him, I wouldn’t be here.’
