Comedian Matt Forde has divided opinion online after criticising a family for bringing a baby – who would not stop crying – to his Edinburgh Fringe show.

The 39-year-old political comic took to Twitter to complain about the family, saying it thwarted large parts of his performance.

‘Someone brought their baby to my show last night,’ he wrote.

‘Sadly it derailed large parts of it because they wouldn’t do the decent thing and just leave when it started crying.

‘I get that it must be tough as a new parent but please, don’t bring babies to adult shows. It’s always a problem.’

The TV star acknowledged that his post was ‘a bit whiny’ but he wanted to ensure the same situation didn’t happen again.

‘It’s like someone’s phone continually ringing and them not turning it off,’ he continued.

‘I’ve had so many messages from people who were there last night who were very polite about the fact it p****d them off.’

He also clarified that he made a joke about the awkward moment and actually incorporated the baby, who was with the father, into the show.

Social media users have been divided over his criticism, with some agreeing with the comedians and others blasting his opinion.

‘As long as you realise this is incredibly sexist as young, breastfed babies can’t be left at home,’ one said.

‘I hope your t&cs made it clear that no babies were allowed at your show & if so surely it is a problem for your door staff or are u happy to take people’s money then shame them?’

Another disagreed, however, replying: ‘The ticket information says the show is 14+ so yes, it’s abundantly clear that a baby shouldn’t be coming to the gig. Does that help?

‘When you have a child, your life changes, and accommodations need to be made for the new addition to the family.’

This morning, the comedian followed up the tweet, saying: ‘Morning everyone. Just catching up on Twitter, anything big happen on here yesterday?’

Matt Forde’s show, Clowns to the Left of Me, Jokers to the Right, runs until Sunday, August 28 at the Edinburgh Fringe.

The official Fringe website claims that ‘babies do not require a ticket.’
