Gabby Petito’s parents Nichole Schmidt and Joe Petito desperately contacted Brian Laundrie’s mum when they began to fear the worst about their daughter – but claim they were met with silence.

The 22-year-old was reported missing during a van life journey across the States with her fiance last year, which they were documenting on social media with the hopes of making it as travel bloggers.

But just over a month into the four-month road trip, Petito disappeared, while Laundrie, 23, returned to his parents’ home in Florida, sparking international concern for her welfare.

A week later the FBI later confirmed a body found in Bridger Teton National Forest, not too far from Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming, was identified as Petito.

Nichole first grew concerned about her daughter’s whereabouts when she stopped receiving replies and regular updates from her daughter in late August.

Desperately trying to get in contact with Petito, Nichole then turned to Laundrie and his mother, Roberta, and texted them both multiple times but to no avail, as new Paramount Plus documentary The Disappearance of Gabby Petito explores.

Nichole revealed: ‘There was a day, I believe it was on the 9th, [when] I realised I never tried to text Brian and I texted his phone and it went green like it wasn’t going through. So that’s when I decided to text his mother and no response there.’

It left her feeling ‘beside’ herself with worry and ready to report both Petito and Laundrie as missing people because she ‘couldn’t get in touch with anybody.’

‘I texted and called her phone repeatedly. I texted his mother, I texted Brian’s phone, I didn’t have anybody else’s number but we didn’t get any response from anyone,’ Nichole added.

Joe also repeatedly tried to get in touch with Laundrie’s parents, saying: ‘So we started calling and calling the parents, trying to text, seeing what we could figure out, but we weren’t getting anything.’

Petito’s stepmother, Tara Petito, described the feeling of not being able to get hold of her as pure ‘panic’.

She told the programme makers: ‘You go into panic mode because you don’t know what’s going on. Your whole body is shocked.’

The Laundrie family declined to participate in the three-part docuseries and deny any allegations of wrongdoing.

A month after Petito’s body was found, Laundrie, who was the main person of interest in the case, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound in Florida’s Carlton Reserve.

In a notebook found among his personal items, Laundrie confessed to killing Petito, who died from strangulation.

The Disappearance of Gabby Petito is available to stream on Paramount Plus.
