Kid Cudi has shared that he suffered a stroke while he was in rehab, which impacted his speech and movement for several months.
In October 2016, the rapper – who has recently been embroiled in a highly-publicised feud with former friend Kanye West – announced that he had checked himself into a rehabilitation facility.
In a statement published on Facebook at the time, the Day ‘n’ Nite musician shared that he had been experiencing ‘depression and suicidal urges’, and felt as though he had been ‘living a lie’ while ‘not at peace’.
In a new interview, Cudi – whose real name is Scott Mescudi – explained that ‘everything was f**ked’ after he suffered a stroke, for which he was hospitalised.
For months, his speech and movement was impacted, the 38-year-old told Esquire.
After months in physical rehab, the following year, Cudi auditioned for a Broadway play called Lobby Hero, reading opposite Superbad star Michael Cera.

After memorising a significant amount of dialogue for the audition, Cudi was ‘happy’ that he ‘proved’ to himself that he was capable of taking on the challenge, despite another actor eventually being chosen for the role.
‘I proved to myself that I could do it. I needed that at the time,’ he said.
‘I was happy. Like, damn, my brain is still strong. I didn’t lose something in that s**t that happened.’
What is a stroke?
Strokes, which are life-threatening, occur when blood supply is cut off to part of the brain, the NHS outlines.
The main symptoms of a stroke are summarised by the acronym ‘FAST’, which stands for ‘Face, Arms, Speech and Time’.
A person experiencing a stroke may experience the following symptoms:
Their face dropping to one side or an inability to smile
An inability to lift both of their arms
Weakness or numbness in one arm
Slurring of speech
Difficulty understanding if someone else is speaking to them
The NHS urges members of the public to call 999 if they spot any of these main symptoms.
Last month, Cudi stormed off stage while performing at a music festival after fans kept throwing objects in his direction.

Having replaced West as a headliner at the Rolling Loud event in Miami, the rapper could be heard saying in a clip: ‘If I get hit by one more f**king thing, if I see one more f**king thing on this f**king stage, I’m leaving. Don’t f**k with me.’
When another object was flung at the stage, Cudi promptly walked off as some of the crowd jeered and booed.
