This Morning hosts Andi Peters and Rochelle Humes left viewers unimpressed with their attempts to grill Rishi Sunak ahead of the Conservative Party leadership election.

Mr Sunak is currently in a two-horse race with foreign secretary Liz Truss, which will result in one of them getting the keys to 10 Downing Street.

The pair have been doing the rounds across the UK to encourage Conservative Party members to vote for them, with current data showing Ms Truss is leading out in front.

But it was the former chancellor who appeared on This Morning to try and get voters back on side on Thursday morning, during an interview with hosts Andi and Rochelle.

However, despite some probes on issues such as the energy crisis, and comments from Ms Truss calling UK workers ‘lazy’, the hosts were criticised by viewers for not ‘challenging’ the guest hard enough.

Towards the end of the chat, the pair brought up the MP’s attempt at using a contactless card in McDonald’s in a photo shared to his Instagram story on Wednesday.

They decided to then quiz him on his go-to order from the fast-food chain, which viewers were left very confused by.

He told them: ‘I was there at about 7.45am in the morning, it was not a burger, I got breakfast.

‘A bacon roll with ketchup and pancakes. If I’m with my daughters we get the wraps. Wraps with the hash brown and everything.’

Viewers quickly criticised the softer line of questioning, as well as fans of the takeaway noting that McDonald’s actually got rid of the breakfast wrap in 2020 due to Covid.

One commented: ‘These two are not capable of challenging Sunak.  #ThisMorning.’

‘Sorry but these two should not be doing this interview. It’s painful #thismorning,’ someone else wrote.

Another wrote: ‘This is just a promotion for Sunak, these two have a list of questions & aren’t capable of challenging the answers…. #ThisMorning.’

‘No wonder that was the interview he was most excited about. Conversations about broom cupboards and McDonalds are hardly going to challenge him, are they? 🙄 #ThisMorning,’ shared another Twitter user.

A commenter added: ‘Rishi Sunak tells This Morning that if he goes to McDonald’s with his daughters they all get the breakfast wrap… as a breakfast wrap aficionado I can confirm they were taken off the menu in March 2020 due to Covid, and in January it was confirmed they will never return!’

I’m still annoyed about its removal from the menu hahaha! If Rishi Sunak was as relatable as he claims to be, he should use his power and influence to bring the wrap back 🤣 #ThisMorning

Another angered viewer said: ‘Stop trying to humanise this multi hundred millionaire asking him about what he ate at McDonalds. Jesus f*****g christ, Rishi Sunak is a f*****g piece of s**t dressing up to trick everyone into voting for him #ThisMorning should be ashamed.’

Other viewers commented that they believed the show’s money expert Martin Lewis would have done a better job of challenging the potential future PM.

One wrote: ‘They should have dragged Martin Lewis in for this, these two couldn’t grill a rasher of bacon…#ThisMorning.’

‘Why was Martin Lewis not involved in this interview? He could have challenged him alot more #ThisMorning,’ said another.

Either Ms Truss or Mr Sunak will be elected the next leader of the country on September 5, after the results of a vote carried out by Conservative Party members.

This Mornign airs weekdays from 10am on ITV.
