Netflix has remained suspiciously tight-lipped over the the role of Uncle Fester in the upcoming Addams Family spin-off Wednesday, and now fans think they’ve worked out why: Johnny Depp has secretly been cast.

Tim Burton is behind the upcoming reboot which will follow the sinister but weirdly lovable Wednesday played by Scream star Jenny Ortega.

Naturally then, with Burton’s long-running history with Depp, a lot of fans have speculated a reunion between the pair is coming and will be a huge surprise on the day of its release.

A celebrity gossip account called Deux Mois, which stresses ‘statements made on this account have not been independently confirmed. this account does not claim any information published is based in fact’ first teased the news.

A tip-off suggested the top secret casting has been put in place as to not ‘overshadow’ Ortega’s moment with Depp’s recent court battle.

Others have also spotted that Fester does not appear in the newly released trailer, which also shared a first look at Catherine Zeta Jones as Morticia and Louis Guzmán as Gomez.

But after Depp’s recent trial with ex-wife Amber Heard, in which The Pirates of the Caribbean actor was victorious in his $50million defamation lawsuit, fans are divided by the news:

If Johnny Depp plays Uncle Fester in Wednesday I’ll be so happy.

They’re keeping Uncle Fester under wraps for the Addams Family Wednesday series. IMAGINE the scenes if Uncle Fester is Johnny Depp😭I highly doubt this, but Tim Burton is directing and we can dream #WednesdayAddams #wednesdaynetflix

The rumours come after Christina Ricci, another Burton muse and Wesdnesday star of The Addams Family movies, will be appearing in the new series, though again details of her character have been kept under wraps.

Netflix confirmed the news on Twitter earlier this year, writing: ‘Yes, it’s true — the magnificent Christina Ricci is joining the cast of the new Wednesday Addams series as an exciting new character *snap snap*.’

Showrunner Miles Millar previously suggested Wednesday would feel like ‘an eight hour Tim Burton movie’.

‘It’s something that lives within the Venn diagram of what happened before, but it’s its own thing,” he said.

‘It’s not trying to be the movies or the ’60s TV show. That was very important to us and very important to Tim.’

Metro.co.uk has contacted a spokesperson from Netflix for comment on this story.

Wednesday will be available to stream on Netflix the autumn.
